this year’s new basil variety was an outstanding success- Bolloso Napoletano, an Italian heirloom with large puckered leaves and incredible aroma. My hands still smell like basil just from processing the seed lol 🌿 #gardening #organic #sustainablefarming #smallbusiness #growyourown 🌱💚

Last year I put a stray purple basil in with my bed of Tulsi, and this beautiful hybrid popped up. I think I’ll save seed from it, the aroma is delightfully unique and would make some amazing tea 🫖 What are your happy garden oopsies? #gardening #gardensky #tea #smallbusiness #oops #tulsi 🌱💚

Aromatic aster is always the last to start blooming out of all our asters. Native to the central plains from ND to TX, it’s a perennial zones 3-9 that grows 24” tall and is a late season lifeline for pollinators. #gardensky #gardening #nativeplants #wildflowers #smallbusiness 🌱💚

This is Edward. Edward is important for being able to view and print seed orders. Sometimes Edward gets amnesia and needs to take a nap. Sometimes his naps make me late getting to the post office. But we still love him anyway. #smallbusiness #smalltown #etsy #shopsmall #whimsical

This year’s experiment: seeing if I can successfully overwinter tricolor sage outside. It’s only hardy to zone 6 and we’re zone 5, but I’ve planted it under a heavy blanket of sedum to both insulate and absorb excess water that might rot the roots. What are your garden experiments? #gardening 🌱💚

Moths are pollinators too! This little cutie is a silver y, one of 35k+ species of owlet moths. Some types are more problematic than others (looking at you, cutworms and loopers) but generally speaking they’re not a major issue. #moths #bugsky #gardensky #gardening #entomology #pollinators 🌱💚

I don’t have a social media manager, I just post when I have the time and spoons- so if you’re one of my almost 3k followers: Thank you! 🥰 My goal isn’t to be famous, just to hold a calm little corner of the internet to appreciate the nature in our own back yards and patios (1/2) 🌱💚🐝🌻

I prune the giant yellow hyssop back hard in early June so it doesn’t bloom until late summer through fall. This not only prevents cross pollination with my anise hyssop, but also gives a late season boost to pollinators 🐝🦋 #gardensky #nativeplants #pollinators #nature 🌱💚

Because I get asked this question a lot: What’s the difference between Roman and German Chamomile? Left flower is German, an annual that easily reseeds itself and averages 24” tall. Right one is Roman, a mat forming perennial (z4-9) that averages 8” tall. #gardensky #bloomscroll #gardentips 🌱💚

When I was a kid I used to think these Goldenrod Solder Beetles were a type of firefly. They’re cousins, but not from the same beetle family. They’re good pollinators though, and both juveniles and adults eat aphids. #gardensky #bugsky #naturephotography 🌱💚

Wood betony is thriving in a partial shade spot of the medicinal garden. Betonica officinalis (formerly known as Stachys officinalis) is part of the Lamiaceae (mint) family but doesn’t spread through rhizomes like most mint- instead the flower spikes droop over and drop seed. #gardening #botany 🌱💚

A common question I get about yellow spotted bee balm is “why is it called yellow if the petals are pink?” It’s because those pink parts aren’t actually petals- they’re bracts at the base of the flowering part. The spotted yellow bits are the actual flower. #gardentips #botany #nativeplants 🌱💚🌸
