ICYMI: On Tuesday, Tonga became the 100th country to take a treaty action under the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, by depositing its instrument of accession at UN Headquarters, and becoming the newest #TPNW state party. 👏 🇹🇴 #️⃣💯 🇺🇳 👏

1/ Remember when we were told a ban on nuclear weapons wouldn't happen? Because the nuclear-armed states would never allow it. Well today, the #NuclearBan which came into force just over 5 years ago, already has the support of a clear majority of states eligible to join it!

1/ 80 years ago at 11.02 am on August 9, JST, the US dropped the atomic bomb on #Nagasaki. In a flash, thousands were dead or injured. By the end of 1945, 74,000 had died. And the consequences from the radiation have affected the survivors to this day. More here: www.icanw.org/remembering_...

Moments ago, the third #NPTPrepCom failed to adopt any outcome, reflecting a horrifying lack of urgency in response to current risks. Yet we've been encouraged by constructive leadership from #TPNW states, and their efforts to reinforce non-proliferation and disarmament norms.
