Excellent news, but did they have to mill Jay/Smith and Brkln Bridge Blvd/Adams/Boerum at the same time? They knocked out both redundant bike routes to the bridge simultaneously.

It's hard to overstate how negative of an impact those massive HVAC fans that never spin down have. It's impossible to hear any announcements outside the train next to the external speaker, and is tough inside with the doors open.

In addition, if you have platform doors it's much easier to do automated intrusion detection between the door and the train. I.e. a foreign object between the closed platform door and the train door could keep the train from leaving the station.

This wasn't mentioned by the IEC during the meeting, so we won't know more until November.

Buried in the Traffic Light Report, the Crosstown CBTC was delayed by 15 months, and then by another 20 months after the report was finalized. Project won't be complete until 2030, though it's unclear when they'll start putting CBTC in-service; last July they forecast in-service in 2027.

To be specific, the work plan was to have signals in March, but in March they delayed until July. Then in June, they delayed to November. Both for "Aligning their schedules". The last time there was an update on CBTC was July 2025, when all active projects were delayed until mid-2027.

"We're running behind, so we won't give status updates for another 6 months". is a really bad sign for any engineering organization.

It's particularly bad that they constantly delay updates on items by months at a time. The last signals update was due in spring, but was delayed with no real reason given. The last update discussed how far they had fallen behind and what they were doing to fix it. They should give an update!

"So, we are going to do the shortest-term plan to keep the structure safe and stable while allowing the city to work with the state on a long-term vision for the entire highway." This is the right approach, and is good to hear, but they should be talking more about what that second part means.

Having a consistent 12%-per-year increase in the number of trees planted is probably more sustainable for the way the city functions than a sudden increase in one year anyway.

It was Sam Schwartz's proposal, but yeah, I think you'd basically be extending I-678 from JFK to the Verrazzano, so that any freight trucks that we're heading to JFK, eastern Long Island, or crossing the Whitestone could use an outer ring road instead of driving through the center of the city.

I'm not saying stop the plan, just saying that if they're putting in a "temporary" fix, we should at least be thinking about a permanent solution.

It'd be nice if there was at least a forward-looking study announced here as part of the initiative. I remember Sam Schwartz at one point talking about using congestion pricing revenues to upgrade the belt to carry trucks, away from Downtown Brooklyn.

Isn't the problem with platform barriers that we have columns on our platforms and they're not straight? DC's station architecture doesn't need to deal with that.

I read this as: "there is potentially a five minute dwell that could be in place after the penn transformation project, which could come down to 2.5 minutes if we make a mega-platform in the middle of the station."
Penn Station Future involves infrastructure improvements in addition to the proposed
Penn Transformation Improvements. Infrastructure improvements include combining
Platforms 5 and 6 into a super-wide platform and additional VCEs for the super-wide
platform. Like Platform 10, the new super-wide platform would allow passengers to wait on
the platform and be able to fully alight and board passengers under 2.5 minutes, which is
less than the scheduled five-minute dwell. This would enable Operating Concept 2 with
eight through-running commuter trains per hour, not including existing and planned
through-running Amtrak service, supporting a shift toward a balanced regional rail concept
if desirable in the future.

That's kinda the crux of the discussion, they were debating whether that was well over 6 minutes, or could be under 6 minutes. They were both awaiting the answer from this FRA study. I haven't digested the study enough to tell you confidently what that is.

i.e. In Paris and London, demand is spread across 3 or more center-city train stations on each line. Here in NYC, nearly the entire train would be getting off at Penn, and not continuing on to Jamaica/Secaucus.

This is the million dollar question, here's a great debate over whether through running would or wouldn't increase capacity at Penn: www.youtube.com/live/Ms3i1Vt... TL;DR the argument against is that 99% of the passengers are getting off at Penn specifically, so it's slow to clear the train.

Living in NYC with buried power lines, I can really only remember a blackout for more than a few minutes during 2003 and Hurricane Sandy. Last year we did have one of two phases go down for a day, due to old equipment.

I mean, the incentives here aren't great, but as of now EVs don't contribute to federal highway maintenance funding at all, despite putting more wear on the roads because of heavy batteries, right? Seems like this would've had to happen sooner or later either through a fee, a VMT tax, or tolling.
