What REALLY happened to the #Neanderthals? Tired of hearing “we killed them all”, “a volcano!” Etc. and all these frankly ridiculous claims? Check out the most popular* article ive written yet for the Deep History Refuge!

For over a century, Victorian antiquarians and 20th-century pop sci framed Neanderthal extinction as a tidy moral fable: dim-witted, brutish evolutionary "rough drafts" rightfully outcompeted by brilliant H. sapiens It is a comforting myth of human supremacy. It is also almost entirely fiction.

I study and am writing a thesis on #Neanderthal complex, and symbiotic behavior; they were far from the “dumb brutes” of pop-culture! What’s something you’ve always wondered; or have been curious about when it comes to these ancient cousins of ours?!?!?

These are called “Fingerdots”, as they are made by dipping the finger into ochre, etc., and then stamped directly on the wall.

A new paper by Ian Towle (AJBA) tackles "the genus problem" in paleoanthropology. Because Australopithecus is paraphyletic and Homo traits are blurred by mosaic fossils, Towle proposes subsuming Australopithecus & Paranthropus into an expanded genus Homo (4–5 Ma). Our full breakdown drops today!

Remarkably, it captures an exact anatomical trait: the body faces away while the head is turned 180 degrees. This level of precise natural observation shows early humans were deeply attuned to the subtleties of non-prey wildlife (Combier & Jöris, 2014). #Paleoanthropology #DeepHistory #WOPA

When science changes, our understanding of deep history grows. 🦴 The Steinheim skull was once labeled "archaic Homo sapiens," but modern CT scans of its inner ear place it firmly in the Neanderthal lineage. It’s a 300,000-year-old reminder that the path to "us" is rarely a straight line. #WOPA

The Levant was the original "Silicon Valley" of human evolution. 🌍 Recent finds from Tinshemet Cave (April 2026) show H. sapiens and Neanderthals sharing burial practices and ochre use 110k years ago. It wasn't a replacement; it was a merger. Collaboration, not isolation, drove our cultural growth.

The "Evolutionary Tree" is officially a "Network." 🧬 New 2026 DNA research (Henn & Gravel) shows Homo sapiens evolved from multiple intermingling populations across Africa, not just one. It’s not a single trunk; it’s a braided stream. Thoughts on this paradigm shift? #DeepHistory #Anthropology

The "oldest story" isn't in a book—it’s on a cave wall in Sulawesi. At 45.5ka, the Leang Tedongnge pig reminds us that the "creative explosion" was a global phenomenon, not just a European one. Deep history is far more vibrant and widespread than we once imagined. 🐗🎨 #HumanEvolution #DeepHistory

Upper Paleolithic “cave art” includes non-figurative symbols (60%+ of marks!) as a pre-planned, systematic, symbolic storage code, as revealed by studies on geometric signs (Von Petzinger, 2015/2017). This image of complex marks from Niaux shows the cognitive shift from “drawing” to “notating.”

Neanderthal "intelligence" is often debated, but the Levallois technique settles it. It requires "prepared core" technology—you have to shape the stone specifically to strike off a single, perfect flake. That’s high-level abstract reasoning. ⚒️✨ #Paleoanthropology #DeepHistory

Evidence of birch bark tar shows Neanderthals created the world’s first synthetic material. To make this adhesive, they mastered "underground ovens" to maintain precise, oxygen-free heat. This is ingenuity at its finest. What other "modern" behaviors are we still missing from the history record? 🦴
