Oui effectivement.
"Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because [it] was victorious in an earlier generation, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterised by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, they will struggle against that peace and prosperity, and against democracy.
(EoH, p. 330)"

It's not a real deal, the EU commission made a bullshit offer to make Trump happy and buy time. The commission doesn't buy LNG and oil, EU companies do. It's the same thing with the 600 billions investments in the US btw. See this interview with Paul Krugman.
Interview of Paul Krugman, economist:
Krugman: I should say, by the time people hear this, there will have been a second Substack post, which is already in the can for the day after we had this conversation, looking into those things. So yeah, the Europeans said we’re going to do $600 billion of investment in the U.S. Take them in two pieces. Not clear that that actually helps, but the question you should immediately ask is, How are they going to do that? Europe is not China. The Chinese government can tell companies or banks, Send the money there, but Europe doesn’t work that way. Europe is a market economy like ours. And this was a deal with the European Commission in Brussels, which isn’t even a government. The European Commission negotiates trade deals, but it has absolutely no authority over domestic economic policies within European countries.

So you ask, How are they going to make this happen? And there’ve already been some pretty frank interviews with European Commission officials who say, Well, actually, this is aspirational, or, We actually have absolutely no ability to affect how much money gets invested in the U.S. We’ve talked to some companies, and numbers like this might happen but not because of us. There is no policy. This is just saying something that they hope will make Trump feel good. There is no policy for the investment. And then they’re supposed to buy $750 billion of U.S. energy products over three years. And that, first of all, has the same problem: How does that happen? The decision about where to buy your oil and liquefied natural gas in the European economy is made by private companies. The bureaucrats in Brussels don’t have any authority over that. They would never think of trying to assert it. And even the governments of Germany and France are not going to really intervene in that. So there is no policy.Second part of the response:
But then beyond that, [it] turns out that those promises are physically impossible. Moving money is one thing, but moving oil and gas involves infrastructure, especially liquefied natural gas. That’s a tough problem. You require very specialized infrastructure to load and unload liquefied natural gas. The U.S. exports a lot, and we have specialized facilities for that, which are running at capacity. So we actually don’t have the ability to export any more. Then receiving it on the other end also requires specialized facilities and infrastructure, and the Europeans are also running at capacity. So they have no ability to take any more U.S. LNG and probably no ability to take any more U.S. oil. And they could invest. But they’re promising to do this over three years, and these investments take time. There’s basically no chance that they would even be physically capable of importing any significant fraction of what they just promised within the three-year timeframe that was part of the deal.

So I think that, and they know that, basically they just scammed Donald Trump. They humiliated themselves and then abased themselves before him—but they also made a fool of him. They also made a promise that they know they can’t fulfill. And then they’ll come up with all sorts of reasons why, Oh, I’m sorry. They’ll approach him with tears in their eyes and say, Sir, but all kinds of reasons why it can’t happen. But they know perfectly well that this is not going to happen.

than it does to point a gun at an unarmed protester.
"The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

No matter how many more armed men Trump sends to impose his will on the people of Minnesota, all he can do is accentuate their valor. No application of armed violence can make the men with guns as heroic as the people who choose to stand in their path with empty hands in defense of their neighbors. These agents, and the president who sent them, are no one’s heroes, no one’s saviors—just men with guns who have to hide their faces to shoot a mom in the face, and a nurse in the back."

"I don’t want to overstate the impact of Rawls. As canonical texts go, he’s never had the cut-through of a Marx or a Rousseau. Crowds have never gathered in the street chanting “realistic utopia.” Elites in the long ’90s, however, tended not to be especially philosophical. They were pragmatic problem solvers, you see, not concerned with ideology (which became something of a dirty word). When they had to justify the fundamentals of their power, they would regurgitate some half-remembered formulations from that one college course (or simply mimic a peer doing that). Conservatives would give you a Cliff Notes Robert Nozick (property rights, markets, a limited state), and liberals would give you a Cliff Notes John Rawls (liberal neutrality, reasonableness, discourse norms)—these being the two thinkers who were generally taught in a Political Philosophy 101 class."

"Reactionary centrists rarely imagine solutions to political problems that do not involve a policy move to the right, especially on social issues. Won an election? You’ll need to give ground to govern. Lost an election? You’ll need to give ground to win next time. That this is obviously unfalsifiable doesn’t bother them in the slightest.""To someone who prioritizes policy above all else, discussing issues at this level may feel like so much PR, or rhetorical fluff—high-minded words that take us far from the substance of politics. But this is how most people think about politics most of the time. That’s because political ideologies—socialism, liberalism, fascism, and so forth—are, above all else, clusters of values. They are ways of thinking, as much as they are sets of conclusions. They provide frameworks for interpreting and engaging with society and politics. And policies either embody and make actionable the values used to justify them—or they (implicitly or explicitly) contradict them. For a party to be persuasive, for it to appear genuine and authentic, its policy and values must both serve the same story. And that story must clearly show why they are right and their opponents are wrong.

This is the limit of appeasement. We reach it when policy concessions cease being normal political compromises intended to achieve and express a set of values and become instead a validation of the convictions of the opponents of democracy. A party that passes this point loses the ability to persuade because it has conceded that its own side is wrong."

« Cutting a nuclear deal
Trump’s big initiative with Iran has been trying to craft some kind of nuclear deal. Trump had pushed this for weeks – even suggesting at various points that such a deal was close – and kept talking about it even after Israel struck Iran last week.

But he’s quickly seemed to move away from that emphasis.

On June 12, Trump said, “We’ve had very good discussions with Iran.”

On June 15, Trump said Iran would “like to make a deal. They’re talking. They continue to talk.” He even said there was “no deadline” on the talks. »

Extrait de l'article "In Defense of Classical Liberalism" publié sur liberalcurrents.com
"The classical liberals also advocated positions that, today, we are used to thinking of as “conservative,” especially in economic policy. But they arrived at these positions while adhering to recognizably progressive principles. It should really be said that conservatives adopted large parts of the classical liberal programme when liberal policy victories, only ever partial and hard won against the objections of contemporary conservatives, became part of the status quo defended by conservatives of subsequent generations. The first “conservatives” were defenders of hereditary oligarchies, subsidies for landowners, commercial monopolies, and all the oppressive mercantile policies the classical liberals attacked."

"Both Putin's invasions of Ukraine and the January 6, 2021, insurrection recall a deadly form of coercive control: the former husband or boyfriend furious that she left him and somehow intent on terrorizing her into returning or destroying her if she resists (experts on coercive control tell us the most dangerous time for an abused woman is when she's left her abuser). In all these cases, there's a logic of "how dare she do it" that denies her right to choose anything but him or, really, to choose at all. Putin seems intent on recovering what he perceives as the power and glory of the Soviet Union by annexing Ukraine (and annihilating its example to Russians of a former Soviet Republic becoming a functioning democracy with political freedoms for its citizens). The 2014 invasion of Crimea followed the ouster of the pro-Russian thug Putin helped put in the presidency (his name was Viktor Yanukovych, and his campaign was masterminded by Paul Manafort, who then turned around to help Trump get elected; Yanukovych fled to Russia when Ukrainians rose up against him)."

Extrait de l'article "The Plot Against America" (https://www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-plot-against-america):
"The pipeline from techno-libertarianism to neoreaction often follows a predictable path: It begins with a libertarian critique of government inefficiency and overreach. This evolves into a broader skepticism of all democratic institutions, seen as slow and irrational compared to the speed and logic of technology. Eventually, this leads to the conclusion that democracy itself is an outdated system, incompatible with rapid technological progress. Avec un objectif, purger l’administration:
Extrait d’un article intitulé « There’s a Term for What Trump and Musk Are Doing » de The Atlantic:
« In other words: regime change. No one should be surprised or insulted by this phrase, because this is exactly what Trump and many who support him have long desired. During his 2024 campaign, Trump spoke of Election Day as “Liberation Day,” a moment when, in his words, “vermin” and “radical left lunatics” would be eliminated from public life. J. D. Vance has said that Trump should “fire every single mid-level bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state, replace them with our people.” Steve Bannon prefers to talk about the “deconstruction of the administrative state,” but that amounts to the same thing. »
