Today in local news, 200 high school students walked out in protest against the football captain's statement of "Free the Cornell 7." www.pressdemocrat.com/2026/10/09/2...
From The Press Democrat: "More than 200 Piner Junior Senior High School students walked out of their classes Friday afternoon, Oct. 9, to demand accountability a week after another student posted “Free the Cornell 7” on Instagram, an apparent reference to the men accused of raping a Cornell University student in 2024.

The students gathered about 2:30 p.m. and marched 2.5 miles to Santa Rosa City Schools’ district offices on Stony Point Road, many wearing white T-shirts covered in red and teal handprints symbolizing victims of sexual violence. The student-organized demonstration brought together teenagers demanding consequences for their classmate’s post, shared with The Press Democrat, and greater support from school administrators for students who speak out against sexual violence."From The Press Democrat: "Piner Junior and Senior High students walked out of class Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, and marched down Fulton Road to protest a classmate's social media post that seemed to indicate support for a group of men accused of sexually assaulting a Cornell University student in 2024. (John Burgess/The Press Democrat)"

Four students with faces partially obscured walk together covered in red handprints on their clothes and bodies, carrying signs that read, "End Rape Culture," "Each time a woman stands for herself, she stands for ALL WOMEN," and "My Freedom Begins with My BODY."

A map of the Bay Area of California (King City at the bottom, Cloverdale at the top) colored orange to indicate a Heat Advisory has been extended through Thursday at 10pm. The information indicates the Bay Area and Central Coast should expect max temps in the mid-90s to 106, with mild minimum temperatures that will limit overnight relief.

It also lists the impacts and safety of extreme heat.

the classic "5 popped collars" meme

a young white man stands in front of a beige wall with a Scarface poster on it, looking off-camera. he wears a light blue polo shirt, and you can see that he has at least four more polo shirts underneath it because all the shirt collars are popped at his neck.

From San Francisco Chronicle: "The IPO filing also reportedly spells out some of the risks.

Nearly a quarter of Anthropic’s revenue came from two anonymous customers last year, according to the prospectus. The company also warned that many of its biggest customers are not locked into long-term contracts, meaning spending could fall if those companies pull back on AI.

Anthropic’s business requires huge amounts of computing power. The more capable its AI models become, the more computing capacity the company needs to train and operate them."From San Francisco Chronicle: "CEO Dario Amodei privately met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Sunday, according to CNBC, after a year of disputes over AI policy and national security.

Three days earlier, a federal appeals court in Washington upheld the Pentagon’s decision to exclude Anthropic’s Claude models from the Defense Department’s supply chain. The court found that the department had sufficient grounds for the designation."

buds I'm begging you to stop reposting context-less stock images without a link to the article they're supposedly citing because it has a picture of Mamdani on it. this is an AI-altered image, and Mamdani did not propose this bill. Link: nycnewswire.com/news/nikki-l...
A screenshot of a post from a user saying, "Wow! can we clone this man? Asking for every American City!"

The image is a stock photo of a woman of color in a black jacket using a self-checkout kiosk. A circle with Mamdani's portrait is embedded to her left. Text overlay reads, "NEWS: New York Bill would force supermarkets to give a 10% discount on every item you scan yourself at the self-checkout." The source is simply listed as FORBES.

On the right-hand side, plainly visible, is a watermark that reads, "Illustrative image / AI-modified."

An X post from @APStylebook that reads: "Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want, or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions, or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

From the San Francisco Chronicle: "Many attorneys are only just learning about prolonged airport detentions, as the government’s immigration strategies change in an effort to hit the Trump administration’s goal of deporting 1 million people each year.

“We are in a black box when it comes to understanding the guidance that is out there,” said Jennifer Whitlock, an attorney with the National Immigration Law Center.

Whitlock fears that between airports and land ports of entry, detainees are regularly being coerced by agents to give up their green cards or other visas to make all the trouble “go away.”"

From The Press Democrat: "After more than two years and tens of thousands of formal complaints pleading for relief from the sound of roaring jet departures overhead, residents of western Sonoma County got a temporary reprieve this month, reporting a dramatic reduction in flight noise over their homes.

But instead of celebrating, some impacted residents are convinced federal officials directed flights away from west county only to soothe the ears of the rich and powerful men who each July gather in at a forested retreat on the south bank of the Russian River.

The shift in outbound flights is documented.

Since July 9, there has been an 82% reduction in outbound flights on the path commonly used for southbound departures from Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport, according to data reviewed by The Press Democrat. That route takes planes over west county communities like Sebastopol, Graton, Occidental and Forestville, as well as the Monte Rio area and the exclusive encampment that takes place at its outskirts — Bohemian Grove."

I know it's been written about ad nauseum at this point but it truly is wild how many people threw AI into their workflow just because and it's so obvious and nonsensical. Like there's no reason for my weather forecast app to do this. It's goofy. It makes me distrust the actual numbers.

folks are starting to do deeper dives into parsing exactly how AI fiction differs from human-authored fiction and it's pretty fascinating, actually arxiv.org/pdf/2604.03136
As AI-generated fiction becomes increasingly prevalent, questions of au-
thorship and originality are becoming central to how written work is evaluated. While most existing work in this space focuses on identifying surface level signatures of AI writing (word choice, syntactic structure), we ask instead whether AI-generated stories can be distinguished from human ones without relying on stylistic signals, focusing on discourse-level narrative choices such as character agency and chronological discontinuity. We propose STORYSCOPE, a pipeline that automatically induces a fine-grained, interpretable feature space of discourse-level narrative features across 10 dimensions (e.g., plot, agents, temporal structure). We apply STORYSCOPE to a parallel corpus of 10,272 writing prompts, each written by a human author and five LLMs (Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini , GPT, and Kimi), yielding 61,608
stories, each ~5,000 words, and 304 extracted features per story. Narrative features alone achieve 93.2% macro-F1 for human vs. AI detection and 68.4% macro-F1 for six-way authorship attribution, retaining over 97% of the performance of models that include stylistic cues. A compact set of 30 core narrative features captures much of this signal: AI stories over-explain themes and favor tidy, single-track plots while human stories frame protagonist’ choices as more morally ambiguous and have increased temporal complexity (e.g., flashbacks, nonlinear structure). Per-model fingerprint features enable six-way attribution: for example, Claude produces notably flat event escalation, GPT over-indexes on dream sequences, and Gemini defaults to external character description. We find that AI-generated stories cluster in a shared region of narrative space, while human-authored stories exhibit greater diversity. More broadly, these results suggest that differences in underlying narrative construction, not just writing style, can be used to separate human-written original works from AI-generated fiction.

From the San Francisco Chronicle: "Crye, who owns a talent agency and a “ninja” gym, quickly emerged as the board’s combative “center of gravity,” Korinke said.

“He is like the general of the army there,” Korinke added. “He really captured the ‘eff you’ zeitgeist of MAGA.”

Crye did not respond to an interview request. He’s been at the center of many of the board’s most controversial or puzzling decisions, like devising an elections commission whose recommendations were deemed illegal by the county’s top attorney, getting a secession activist hired as a health consultant after failing to install him as a county executive, and appointing Jan. 6 attendee and QAnon believer Jon Knight to the Mosquito and Vector Control board after Knight aired his suspicion that Bill Gates had genetically modified mosquitoes to mass-vaccinate the public.

But it was something else Crye manifested that Korinke and Rickert say shocked a public that had gotten used to the “Jerry Springer” vibes and junior-varsity kleptocracy."

Even if Kellstrom wins in November, the results of the June 2 primary tilt the county’s most powerful body back to the center-right — ending a five-year MAGA experiment and signaling trouble for President Donald Trump in one of California’s Trumpiest strongholds."From the San Francisco Chronicle: "“People have seen the result of a MAGA-led government, whether it’s on a national level or a local level,” said Mary Rickert, a lifelong Republican who served two terms on the Board of Supervisors before losing to a Trump-aligned challenger in 2024. “They are seeing the consequences of putting people in positions they are not qualified (for).”"
