Ken Paxton’s Ties to Convicted Fraudster Exposed via Blind Trust
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his wife, state Senator Angela Paxton, invested $600,000 into a business run by a man convicted of fraud. _The Texas Tribune_ reports that the Paxtons gave the cash to a construction materials business run by Scott Sherman, a home builder who pleaded guilty to mortgage fraud in 2014, through what was presented to the public as a blind trust. In reality, the Paxtons’ business activities were not shielded, as should be the case in a blind trust. According to the _Tribune_ , which cited previously unreleased records from Ken Paxton’s 2023 impeachment investigation, Sherman’s companies sent the Paxtons thousands of dollars while they were facing mounting tax debts. Ken Paxton was investigated by the Texas state legislature and was eventually acquitted. Now he’s Texas’s Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in a tight race with Democratic challenger James Talarico. Paxton’s business dealings fly in the face of his public statements. He said in a news release last year that “in Texas, we fight fraud head-on and will not rest until every last corrupt actor is brought to justice.” Ethics experts told the _Tribune_ that his activities undermine his position as Texas’s top law enforcement official. Richard Painter, a former chief ethics lawyer to President George W. Bush, said he thought Paxton would be smarter than this. Referring to people like Sherman, Painter said, “They’ll pay out their friends while they’re not paying their taxes, run up debt. But the question is, why is the attorney general of Texas dealing with those kinds of people?” Painter added that he thought “the attorney general of Texas would have the good sense not to be dealing with a convicted felon.” Angela Paxton filed for divorce from Ken last year on “biblical grounds,” referring to her husband’s infidelity. Ken Paxton has continued to deal with shady characters since his investment in Sherman, spending New Year’s Eve 2024 partying with his mistress and two campaign donors who both fled the U.S. from health care fraud charges.

Inside the legal battle over undocumented immigrants’ right to challenge their detention
_**Never miss a story!** The Texas Tribune's daily newsletter gives readers the most essential Texas news. Sign up for The Brief._ Immigrants who entered the country illegally don’t have a right to seek bond while they’re in custody and going through deportation proceedings, even if they’ve set roots in the U.S., a federal appeals court ruled Friday. In a 10-7 ruling, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled that current immigration laws allow the federal government to hold detained immigrants until they’re deported — regardless of whether they have made a life in the U.S. and lack a criminal history. ## Related Story ### Inside the legal battle over undocumented immigrants’ right to challenge their detention May 21, 2026 Trump-appointed Judge Cory Wilson wrote in the court’s ruling that if undocumented immigrants have not been legally admitted to the U.S., they are only entitled to whatever rights Congress has spelled out in immigration laws. He added that if undocumented immigrants in custody want to be free from detention, “they can do so at any moment by agreeing to leave the country.” In a concurring opinion, Judge Andrew Oldham agreed. “Because such aliens remain legally unadmitted, they receive exactly the same due process rights that they would have if they had come through a legal port of entry — which are whatever rights Congress chooses to give them,” Oldham wrote. Judge Leslie Southwick, a George W. Bush appointee, wrote in his dissent that the ruling has created an “impenetrable wall between the Constitution and these long-term residents.” Rebecca Cassler, senior litigation attorney at the American Immigration Council, who argued the case before the 5th Circuit, said the court’s ruling is an attack on constitutional due process rights, which have been guaranteed to anyone living in the U.S., regardless of immigration status. “The right to due process is a fundamental constitutional protection, and it is meant to protect every person in this country. Because of today’s decision, that right is hollow for immigrants in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi,” she said. “But the logic of the 5th Circuit’s decision threatens everyone in this country: When courts degrade the meaning of liberty for some, we all suffer the consequences.” ## Mass deportation efforts The case stems from the arrest of three men in Texas by state troopers between November 2025 and February 2026 during routine traffic stops. All three have lived in the country for at least 14 years, worked during that time and have children who are American citizens. The troopers turned the men over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who held them in detention without allowing them to see a judge. Ignacio Sosnava Rodriguez, Miguel Angel Gomez Alvarado and Alejandro Villegas Angel were eventually released from ICE custody after federal judges found that holding them without a chance for a bond hearing violated the men’s due process rights. The Trump administration appealed, arguing that federal immigration law says undocumented immigrants should be held until deportation without bond hearings — a policy it put in place in July 2025. Friday’s ruling is welcome news for the Trump administration, which has prioritized immigration enforcement as part of its mass deportation efforts. “Big win in the Fifth Circuit on mandatory detention for illegal aliens, a principle codified in 1996 legislation but ignored by the deep state for decades,” James Percival, a lawyer in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said on social media, referring to Clinton administration immigration law that expanded the list of immigrants who can be more easily deported. ## “Rejecting due process” Gracie Willis, an attorney with the National Immigration Project, which is representing the three Texas men, said the general public should be concerned that a federal court believes the government can hold people indefinitely without justification. “We look at this case as an affront to due process, as the 5th Circuit rejecting due process,” Willis said. “It’s really a shocking extension of this attempt to criminalize immigrants and to hold immigrants in detention without any opportunity for them to be released, thereby creating an environment of fear.” Willis said her organization is still assessing what legal action to take and has not decided if it plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. She said immigration lawyers are anticipating how district courts are going to react to this ruling. Many district judges have ruled that immigrants being held in detention centers have a right to bond as long as they are not a flight risk or a danger to the community. Even though Friday’s ruling is limited to the 5th Circuit, which includes Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, the Trump administration has transferred many immigrants from other states to detention centers in Texas. ## A policy change by the Trump administration Under federal immigration laws, the government can quickly deport undocumented immigrants who recently crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without giving them a chance for a bond hearing. But for those who have lived in the U.S. for months or years before being detained, the law gave them the right to challenge their detention. In July 2025, the Trump administration announced a policy change, saying that anyone who has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents — regardless of how long they’ve been in the country — doesn’t have a right to bond. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a separate but similar case that directly challenges the Trump administration’s mandatory detention policy. According to ProPublica, immigrants filed more habeas corpus petitions — a legal procedure that allows a person detained by the government to challenge their imprisonment — in the first 13 months of the second Trump administration than in the past three administrations combined. ## Related Story ### Texas court district leads U.S. in immigrants challenging legality of federal detention Feb. 10, 2026 Since January 2025, immigrants have filed more than 89,000 petitions against the Trump administration, seeking their release. Friday’s ruling doesn’t prohibit other detainees from filing habeas corpus petitions if they entered the country legally. Politico found that more than 400 federal judges — appointed by presidents of both major political parties — have ruled in favor of immigrants’ right to due process in more than 5,000 cases since the Trump administration’s policy change last year. In comparison, 41 judges have sided with the administration’s interpretation of the law in 250 cases, according to a Politico analysis of federal government data. The Trump administration appealed some of the cases to higher courts, leading to conflicting rulings. **_You've read_** **_**_**__**_**articles this month. Palmer Luckey Is Launching a Genetically Engineered War Dog Startup
Comando Chihuahua, a dog with the Mexican National Guard, being prepared for a training demonstration on October 1, 2026.Gerardo Vieyra/NurPhoto/Getty Get your news from a source that’s not owned and controlled by oligarchs. Sign up for the free _Mother Jones Daily_. It is a truth universally acknowledged that rich people love a designer dog. TikTok influencers walk their viewers through the process of cloning their dearly departed pugs. If you’ve got enough money, you can get a genetically-engineered hypoallergenic beagle. And, of course, pre-CRISPR genetic abominations created with simple old-school breeding are all over the American suburbs. (Did you know the creator of the Labradoodle called the breed his life’s great regret? People usually hate it when I tell them that.) It’s no surprise, then, that weapons-tech entrepreneurs—being wealthy and ostentatious—would get in on the designer-dog market. Enter Warhound, the brainchild of Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey—disgraced former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s brother-in-law—and Ben Lamm, the guy who has spent the last several years saying his startup Colossal will bring back extinct animals like the wooly mammoth. Warhound, announced Thursday, has already raised $200 million in seed funding to create genetically engineered “war dogs” for the US military. That money comes from investors including far-right billionaire Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, which shares leadership with Palantir, and In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm founded by the CIA and linked with far-right billionaire Peter Thiel. (Luckey’s other startup ideas include a proposal to profit off “oxytocin doping,” the proposed use of bonding hormones to keep women from divorcing their husbands.) The military currently employs about 1,600 dogs, mostly for bomb- and drug- sniffing purposes. Usually, they’re standard-issue Belgian Malinois or German Shepherd dogs. According to a Warhound press release, 80 percent of these dogs are currently sourced from Europe, though some are bred in the US. Less than half of dogs who begin the military’s training program finish it. Lamm believes dogs could be enhanced for health, longevity, and “for things like speed and agility or enhance olfactory sensors for bomb sniffing and whatnot,” he told _TechCrunch_ this week. Anduril, meanwhile, would provide “advanced cybernetic Augments, software, and battlefield situational awareness.” It wouldn’t be Lamm’s first time engineering a canine: last year his company, Colossal, bred three hybridized grey wolves with long, white hair. Colossal branded the canines as “dire wolves”—a species that has been extinct for about 10,000 years—though skeptical scientists noted that they were merely genetically-modified versions of extant wolves, not a whole-cloth recreation of an extinct species. Similarly, the Warhound dogs will reportedly be based on the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd, though Lamm has said he intends to create “a new type of dog.” Among other things, the “warhounds” are another manifestation of the right-wing obsession with genetic optimization—you could call it the science of good genes. As Silicon Valley races to engineer designer genius babies, putatively to thwart the AI threat, they’ll have designer war dogs to protect them. “Led by CEO David Spirk, the company will reduce dependence on a shrinking European supply chain and strengthen America’s ability to protect its own people, infrastructure, and national security interests,” Warhound’s representatives wrote in a press release that describes dogs as if they were critical minerals. Spirk, a former Marine Corps intelligence analyst, also recently worked for Palantir with a focus on “expanding the company’s software footprints across the U.S. government.” The dogs do not yet exist, but Warhound says it hopes to begin producing them within two years. And its founders have friends in high places in the US government. “If we’re going to be in anguish about losing a species, now we have an opportunity to bring them back,” Doug Burgum, Trump’s secretary of the interior, said in 2025, as he attempted to gut the endangered species list. “Pick your favorite species and call up Colossal.”

Idaho Lawmakers Tried to Conflate Abortion with Human Trafficking and Seattle Attorneys Are Fighting Back - The Stranger www.thestranger.com/news/idaho-lawm…
thestranger.com
An Incomplete History of the Millionaires Tax
Three years ago, the Idaho state legislature passed a law making it illegal to assist minors in crossing state lines to access abortion care. In the paranoiac tradition of American anti-abortion policy, the law was rooted in a poorly disguised moral panic: It specifically banned “abortion trafficking”—the fictional concept of shadowy adults coercing minors into having abortions and abducting them to make it happen. This, obviously, is a problem that doesn’t exist, and would curtail the very real rights of minors and their allies, all while claiming to have children’s best interests at heart. Now, a lawsuit spearheaded by the Seattle-based gender equality legal advocacy group Legal Voice is challenging Idaho’s law, and what comes next could impact access to abortion everywhere, for better or for worse. “Everyone wants young people to be healthy and safe, but this law, if it stands, will put them in danger and isolate them from trusted adults, which is what nobody wants,” says Wendy Heipt, senior litigation counsel at Legal Voice. Idaho has a trigger law that immediately criminalized abortion when _Roe v. Wade_ was overturned, but Idahoans seeking abortions commonly travel to states like Washington and Oregon for care, a dynamic that predates _Roe_ ’s reversal and has stymied the efforts of anti-abortion activists, since freedom of movement is a constitutionally protected right. But by targeting young people’s access to abortion, Idaho lawmakers may have identified a loophole in their efforts to curtail abortion-related travel, one likely to be replicated elsewhere if it’s allowed to continue. Legal Voice is arguing that Idaho’s travel ban blocks the First Amendment by preventing Idahoans from even discussing abortions across state lines. The law is also poorly written: it states that it’s illegal for an adult to “harbor” or “recruit” minors, but doesn’t give clear definitions for either term, which creates confusion both about following and enforcing the law. And then there’s that one pesky detail in the Constitution: the right to travel between states is a fundamental personal freedom, one that states with anti-abortion policies have struggled to successfully undermine, even as restrictive abortion bans have gone into effect since _Roe v. Wade_ was overturned. In an April memorandum requesting a summary judgment in the case, attorneys from Legal Voice, the Lawyering Project, and Stoel Rives LLP mapped out concerns the law raises about barring travel tied to health care when that treatment is legal in the destination state. “If states could prohibit such assistance, the right to travel would become meaningless in practice,” they wrote. But if Legal Voice’s case prevails, it could set a useful precedent by affirming that an anti-abortion policy in one state can’t necessarily be enforced in another. So far, Legal Voice and the case plaintiffs have secured an injunction to keep the law from going into effect. It was modified following an appeal to the Ninth Circuit and remains partially in place. Still, according to Legal Voice, “Under the current order, our clients can still provide information, encouragement, and financial resources to youth seeking abortion care.” Now back at the district court level, both sides have issued motions for a summary judgment, meaning a ruling could soon be issued, without the need for a trial. Legal Voice’s plaintiffs in the case are Lourdes Matsumoto, a lawyer who needs to freely share abortion information in her work with young survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence; the Northwest Abortion Access Fund; and the Indigenous Idaho Alliance, which works with five Northwest tribes and connects pregnant people with abortion resources. “They serve indigenous communities throughout Idaho, including for health care autonomy, and they want to support people making their own decisions, including minors,” says Heipt. “And their family structure doesn’t always fit the way the laws are written.” In choosing to target young people and the adults who support them, Idaho’s law isn’t unusual. It’s a common tactic in anti-abortion legislation (and anti-trans legislation, for that matter; the two are irrevocably intertwined): Work your way up to targeting access to health care for everyone, but begin by eroding minors’ access. “That’s typically where it starts,” says Heipt. “If they are successful with minors, I can assure you that it will not stop with minors.” Historically, anti-abortion activists have accomplished this through policies like parental notification laws, popularized even before the US Supreme Court overturned _Roe_ in _Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization_. These laws required minors to involve their parents in decisions about abortion, or to make their case before a judge to get permission if involving a parent wasn’t possible. Though it contains no real requirements for involvement from a caregiver, Idaho’s abortion travel ban has been justified, like parental notification laws, as a policy promoting parental rights. But just as “abortion trafficking” isn’t a real problem, a parental rights framing around abortion doesn’t make much sense, either, since data shows most young people who seek abortion care _voluntarily_ choose to involve trusted family members. A study on parental involvement in minors’ abortion decisions, published in the _Journal of Adolescent Health_ , found that most minors—64 percent—specifically shared their plans to seek abortion care with their mothers, and, intriguingly, that parental involvement did not automatically equate to greater confidence in pregnancy decisions. Even without parental support, 81 percent of young people had “high confidence” in their own decision-making around abortion; maternal involvement was “not significantly associated with having high confidence in the decision,” the researchers found. This is a very different reality than the “abortion trafficking” Idaho’s travel ban has purported to solve. In fact, when the law was first introduced in the Idaho legislature, Idaho Anti-Trafficking Coalition executive director Jennifer Zielinski told the _Idaho Statesman_ that conflating human trafficking with helping someone voluntarily seeking abortion disrupted actual efforts to stop trafficking and risked retraumatizing victims. While human trafficking does sometimes involve forced abortion or pregnancy as a tool of control, the Idaho law would do nothing to help. “It takes the true effort off course,” Zielinski told the paper. Heipt agrees. “It really does a disservice to actual survivors of trafficking to call something ‘trafficking’ because you don’t like it,” she says. And even the bill’s proponents seemed to understand this: The word “trafficking” has since been removed from the law, a nod to its bad-faith framing. Whether a judge will view it that way remains to be seen. A decision in the case is expected early next year. * * * #### More in NEWS _Local (and not-so-local) news from your favorite writers._ ## An Incomplete History of the Millionaires Tax How It Happened, What’s at Stake, Who’s Trying to Kill It, and Where the Cash Is Coming From ## Seattle City Council Passes Draconian Effective RV Ban Legislative Package Also Funds Vehicle Storage and Services For Homeless Residents ## The AI Wars Come to Ravenna There’s a contentious election in a normally sleepy North Seattle legislative district, with out-of-state money pouring in. The City of Seattle will likely ban oversized RVs from parking overnight in most parts of the city. That is, if the mayor signs the City Council’s legislation. Meanwhile, news of the possible change is trickling down to the people who live in those RVs.
