It’s ITP Awareness Month

An image of a fox character with the words reading, “I have chronic ITP” written around them.

September is ITP awareness month, and so I’d like to share some information about this auto immune disease.

ITP is an auto immune disorder that causes your body to attack your blood’s platelets. Platelets are what clots your blood, so if you have low platelets, you can bleed out.

This disease comes in two different “forms”: sometimes it’s a one time deal, others it’s a chronic condition. Unfortunately in my case, it is chronic.

I have struggled with this for several years and have been hospitalized many times due to it. Once I was rushed to the hospital (during the height of COVID where hospital beds were scarce to give a backdrop of the seriousness of the disorder) because I had ZERO platelets. I had taken a blood test at the hospital when I was rushed there and it came back as not being able to detect a single platelet. I was then hospitalized for almost 2 weeks while they worked around the clock to bring my platelet count back up.

Due to this disease being chronic for me and causing blood not to clot, it’s obviously a very life threatening disease in my case. When I was hospitalized they didn’t even let me brush my teeth because of the bristle poked my gums and made them bleed, I would bleed out non stop. So they had given me a sponge after a few days to go over my teeth with. I was in the hospital unit that is a step below ICU and had to be monitored by staff around the clock in case I fell or something.

I am now on immuno suppressants for life (which I’m happy about since it’s better than bleeding continuously) which keeps the platelet count from dipping into dangerous levels, but before I was able to do so via daily pill form, every 2 years I had to go in for infusions of a treatment similar to chemo therapy to lower my immune system. During these treatments many times my veins collapsed and it was the most painful experience when that happened.

I have to also, now, take blood tests every 2 months and am under the care of a hematologist who I see every 6 months.

It’s a pretty rare disease yet extremely life threatening, and since September is ITP Awareness Month, I thought I’d shed some light on this horrible auto immune disorder.
