We are a country allegedly founded on freedom, yet we're routinely jailing people for weeks, months, and even years over a civil issue. How is this allowed to go on? We complain (at least we used to) when other countries detain people indefinitely without charge or conviction.

If you're voting in person you're standing there at the scanner. Of course, they know whose ballot it is. Things are bad enough without having to concoct false schemes for people to worry about.

We are not in Canada. I can't speak for every state but in Florida, you'd be offered a new ballot because the scanner wouldn't be able to read it.

I was a poll worker for years in Florida. We don't write on ballots but stray marks won't invalidate them. They will make it difficult for the scanner to read. When someone made a stray mark we would spoil that ballot and offer them a new one. Plus, politifact says this is a false meme.
