Got my copies and am carefully reading before wrapping them as presents. I have a mean streak. I’m really impressed with the physical quality of the book, the paper and the binding feel very expensive. (The quality of the writing and artwork go without saying,)

You are absolutely right about prices and deposits (we bought a £20K house on the standard 2.5 x one salary + 1.5 x second). Between us we earned about £10K. BUT the interest rate was very high, 12 to 15% peaked at about 17%. So not all sunny. Low deposit amount was what really helped.

That I don’t know. It has to be paid for somehow (and improved) but have only heard options discussed. Could be some sort of insurance up front, payments when you are receiving care, hopefully something with a cap on the amount unlike now.

What he said was “everyone contributes and everyone is covered. Free at the point of use and no care charges paid out of your basic state pension.” Currently if your LA helps pay for care, State Pension is counted as income when calculating your contribution. Leaves an allowance of about £32pw.

Was it the cat or human who screamed? I ask as a kitten fell into the bath my husband was in and clawed her way up the poor man. I retrieved it from the top of his head. Went from being cute to slaughterhouse adjacent surprisingly quickly (Cat lived to 17 despite many, expensive, tries to expire)

My dad got me to read it in my early teens as a preventative against Hardy, Mary Webb and their ilk. Pleased to say, it worked beautifully. The TV adaptation was terrific too: fabulous cast and totally got the spirit of the book. Not on iPlayer, but Miriam Margolyes Remembers .. is, with clips.

A friend’s sister caught measles at two years old. It was just before vaccines came in. She was severely brain damaged. Please get your kids vaccinated to protect them and the children who can’t be vaccinated - young babies, immunocompromised.

She’s such a fluent liar that she can’t be dumb. Don’t think she was a deluded supporter, she knew exactly what she was doing. Similarly when she married an elderly billionaire I was always amazed that the cross she wore so ostentatiously didn‘t burst into flame.

Sorry things are going badly this week. Bath Cat and Dog Home have a gorgeous looking cockapoo called Fig looking for a home, although she’s almost eight. They are a stellar organisation, my son and daughter in law adopted from there last year. Good luck for the search.
