Ok so why should I care about a Democrat who would support something like this

No, I don't really follow the news that close

I think you might feel differently if we just went through a significant and successful assault on jewish rights, with this hypothetical candidate promising to deliver more

It's not just sports. The idea that trans women could never fairly participate in sports operates on the belief that we do not make real changes to ourselves. If that lie gets accepted, then they go after our rights as prisoners. This world does horrible things to trans people, I object to more.

This is not just "not saying what I want to hear", this is "choosing to say things that cause harm to trans people". I'd like to hear a single dem talk about doing something for trans people beyond defend from further assault! I understand that is hoping for too much. But I can't accept this.

I saw it in theaters actually, great movie. Nobody had giant hands

YOU GUYS ARE GIVING IN TO THE TRANSPHOBIC FASCISTS BY INSISTING THAT IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE AND NECESSARY TO THROW US TO THE WAYSIDE AND ACT LIKE WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO EVEN OBJECT

Wait I'm sorry, but you believe that our current congress is providing federal funds for fighting covid and that somehow this congress would be giving more of that money to blue states??
100
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 1h
Do you understand the federal government works? How will this senator change anything about the state's current COVID protocols?

I think a Democrat can get elected in South Carolina without calling trans girls "biological men" and contributing their funding to the project to eliminate trans people. Especially if the Democrat is on the record being in favor of trans rights. This is a proven losing strategy.

This is the fairest criticism I've received but I couldn't see another source for the announcement from these senators

I really hope that the person behind me enjoys the joke that got sent to them! I'm impressed by the aim, that's a good throw

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 1h
That seems really unlikely because that word was *just said* and so it would be front of mind, wouldn't be hard to think of it
100
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 1h
They might be *your* best hope. But that would mean it's in your interest to prevent flip flops like this, they end up in an unresolvable debate with their past statements in favor of the trans rights that they now abandon. If people would speak up about that, there might be some future for me too!

I understand that there are arguments counter to my own! But I am getting called a republican and a wrecker and a traitor for recognizing this threat and calling it out. And it has convinced me that there is no limit to how much you all would be willing to sell out trans people

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 2h
This goes beyond "the establishment". Back in August, the amount of money spent by Democrats to produce anti-trans ads was $0. And now, it's a non-zero amount. How high does it have to get before I'm allowed to find it unacceptable and a threat to my existence?

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 2h
You should be concerned about what you can be made to accept simply because it's not as bad as the other guy's plan

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
Don't worry, the next election will also be the most important in our lifetime too. They all will be.
110
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
It's horrible! But the torture and abuse of immigrants has been a bipartisan project, and I don't expect that to change when the only Democratic party values are "my opponent is right" and "this is the most important election of our lifetime, we have to win at any cost"

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
If my choices are "being trans will ruin my life" and "being trans will ruin everyones life", I'm going to pick the funnier option. Give me better options.
100
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
You're not really selling me on the idea that I should support this party if you think they have such a strong commitment to the anti-trans position that not even losses will dissuade them
110
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
I find it hard to believe that the people who attempt to jettison my rights will fight for them later when it's more convenient.

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
Why are you not mad at the politicians fracturing the coalition by attacking trans people
110
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
What part of what I said leads you to doubt? And how do you figure that to be the case with the senate? They had a majority and we've still got an election
110
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
Denying the reality of who we are and suggesting that we should have less rights is a really terrible way of demonstrating tolerance
100
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
It would make it less likely that anyone would be able to convincingly argue that the candidates have to say this about trans people in 2028 and 2030 and 2032 and 2034 and 2036, because it helped us win in 2026.

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
You should let me know when you think of the word. Why would you even post before you remembered?

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
It's many dems, in all of those battlegrounds, where all of the money is going. If we see election after election where democrats have to spend millions of dollars attacking trans people "because it's the battleground" then that will end up making life worse for trans people.
020
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
"Don't you see they'll kill you worse" is unconvincing if I'm still gonna end up dead
120
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 3h
It's not accelerationism. If the Democrats take the position that they'll agree with Republicans that trans people should have less rights, and the only disagreement is on how many, then that is an existential threat to people like me, and it must be stopped.

I would prefer Graham to be elected, especially if this filibuster reform goes through and allows a single transphobic dem to help the republicans with this thehill.com/homenews/sen... but in general I think you all need to loudly reject Dems spending money on anti-trans ads, otherwise it will grow!
The senators also proposed a fast-track process for considering bills on the Senate floor that pass out of committee with strong bipartisan support, noting that more than 650 bipartisan bills have passed out of committee but haven’t received any floor time because of time and procedural constraints. Under this new expedited process, if a bill passes out of committee with the support of a majority of Republican and Democratic senators, it would be eligible for passage on the Senate floor with a simple majority after six hours of debate.

Doing so would require the bill’s supporters to gather the signatures of 16 senators, including at least one from each party, on a petition.

Also I didn't mean "hurts" as in "hurts our feelings". This lie encourages people to believe that our identities are just something we say, something to be humored, and not anything substantially real. This advances the cause against our existence.

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 4h
lol where did he say that
110
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 4h
That is not a similar situation at all. That was giving a new right, not taking away one that existed. And these lies still hurt the trans community, propogating this "biological man" slur and denying the reality of our sex change

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 5h
Young trans men were able to get top surgery, and it's good that they were. We need to stop saying "this good thing isn't even happening". It was happening and it should happen more.

My concern is that this falls into the common pitfall for Democrats, where they think they're *only* talking to the 'persuadables'. I think there is a cost if Dems are too afraid to say that women have rights over their bodies, that it would lead them to be reluctant to act as tho the right exists.

I believe you! When I transitioned, I learned all about how sincerely held religious beliefs can lead people to think they have a right to remove the bodily autonomy of other people. My family got smaller. And I agree that these people can be convinced that there are other ways to do so.

Cis liberals gave this woman a bunch of money after getting called a trans slur and then she used her money to make an ad attacking trans people.
Dr annie andrews on screen next to the sentence "no men in women's sports"

Are you going to post the ad on here where you attack trans people and slur trans girls as "biological men" in response to being called a different slur for trans people?

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 7h
Also, I think you are too comfortable saying tranny
020
semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 7h
It's actually really terrible to call trans women "biological men" because it denies the reality of our sex change. We aren't just identifying as women, we make real changes.

I'm not going to see Digger because I don't use letterboxd, it looks like it's one of those ones where you're supposed to get more out of having an opinion about the movie than watching it

Hi, I was wondering about this passage in particular. Do you think there might be some consequences from an even greater retreat from the Democrats in arguing for the fact that women have rights? I feel like this would be a bad move, especially with the state of everything
Demonstrating the real-world impact of abortion laws on maternal mortality, telling stories of suffering by married women pregnant with wanted babies who could not get care, or presenting data showing that legal bans are less effective than other policies in preventing abortions have a better chance of breaking through than arguments on grounds of women's rights.

semble anne @sembleanne.bsky.social · 8h
This whole thing about how we should focus our messaging on how abortion is bad and it should be stopped in other ways, rather than stating clearly that women have rights, is maybe one of the worst ideas I've heard this cycle. And people have had a lot of terrible ideas, it's a competitive race
