I see Last Days routinely recommended when someone asks for folk horror fiction, so maybe I’m truly not getting something here…C’est la vie! I can’t really say if I enjoyed this read or not, but it was a slog to get through.

wasn’t understanding British references or if the narration was just that muddy. I’d find myself rereading shit to the same level that I did with Wuthering Heights, which was written almost two centuries before this book. Understanding what was going on at certain points was difficult.

There were some really good moments smattered throughout the book: descriptions that were effective and concepts that were scary. But these unfortunately could not make up for the other issues. I also found the language of the book to be confusing at times, and I’m not sure if it’d because I just

-sort, but truly, the biggest change in him was going from wanting to make the film to no longer wanting to be involved. No real change in his character- which isn’t always necessary, mind you- but he was consistently spiteful, bitter, and unwilling to take responsibility for himself throughout.

100

-and I 100% agree with that. The Blood Friends are such a cool concept, but the fact they can be shot down like CoD zombies ruins how inescapable and insurmountable they were set up to be. Kyle was also insufferable. I could tolerate this at the beginning because I thought he’d have an arc of some-

100

-and I did enjoy the different locations giving a different sort of ambience for the interview portions. But good lord the second half of the book was frustrating, especially the ending. Others on Goodreads pointed out the fact it feels more like an action film than a horror novel at the climax-

27. Last Days by Adam Nevill I should’ve known better than to trust TikTok with a book recommendation! The frustrating part is that I actually really adored the slow-burn of the first half of the book. The vibes were ominous, and the readers finding out more with the main characters was fun-

25. Resident Evil (2026) This was fun for me, who has had very little exposure to the games! I had a really good time with this movie- the tension actually got me throughout the film, which hardly ever happens! Yay!

24. Deltarune Chapter 5 Yes I just barely finished this. The Flowery fight truly took the wind out of my sails. I think the Dark World in this chapter was the weakest of them so far, and I found myself wanting more Light World moments than anything. But as always, I love the characters.

23. Akira (1988) What can I say about this movie that hasn’t been said before? Fucking phenomenal work of art, though my first viewing was a little soured by the six year old that was inexplicably in the audience

131

All that being said, I did enjoy the book. I think that the prose was gorgeous at so many points, and the author’s ability to conjure up such visceral imagery is very impressive. I just wish we got more time with the tone of the first half of the book, but I still had a good time regardless.

-of a witchhunt plotline that is so much less interesting than how the book started out. I truly thought the ending of this book would have been something related to her realizing how dysfunctional their relationship was too, but it just went in the tragic love direction (which still made me cry lol

-to be a morally gray character from my reading, but then just became a heroic self-sacrificing, romantic beau. Georgette questioning herself to be sane over her affection for the man who is drowning her, to the man she suspects is taking advantage of her grief, is thrown out the window in favor-

100

-a lot of plotlines going on at once, and this made the focus of the book deviate from its core thesis of grief. I feel like the book would’ve been a lot stronger had it focused more sharply on the medical drownings and the complex relationship between Georgette and Dr.Haddor, a man who was set up-

100

-to let things just sit and be subtle. There would be a particularly good line that hinted to an earlier plot beat, but then right after that would come an overt explanation linking it back to that plot beat instead of having faith in the reader to piece things together on their own. There were also

22. The Mother Who Drowns by A.R. Tapiero There were things I both greatly enjoyed and didn’t like about this book in equal measure. The setting and ambience were DYNAMITE though, love me some gloomy coastal settings! In a nutshell, I think the author did not have enough confidence in themselves-

SOO CUTES I love the color scheme !!!

A reference sheet of a purple ankylosaurus cat hybrid with black hair and light green accents. There is a full body to the right and four chibis on the left wearing casual scene inspired outfits. The text reads "Moxie. Ankylosaur cat hybrid. they/he/she."

20. Return of the Living Dead Holy shit that was such a fun movie. Loved the zombies in this one. There’s something so unnerving about them being fast and not shamblers. Also I love Spider, he deserved better!!!

19. Barbarian I was expecting this to be way different in tone so I was delighted by how campy it was. I had a lot of fun with this one!

140

I was going to rant more about this, but all I will say is the prose is so bad that I now have infinitely more faith in getting my own writing published someday. Like it’s not even the fact that it’s translated, the narrative voice is just so unbelievably horrible

18. My Husband And I Sleep In a Coffin DNFed at around page 106. I had a better time dealing with my skin infection that I’ve had for the past two weeks than reading this.

-and even other, less major character designs like Macha? Like Macha’s design was SO good and it just sucked that the kids kinda looked like extras in a Happy Meal commercial 😭 I really enjoyed the mystical atmosphere of this movie though, it was really relaxing!!! Definitely something I’d rewatch
