I think about the English evolution of the verb “to check” in “checks and balances”. Modern speakers think of “to check” first in the sense of “verification”, instead of “to stop forcibly” or “to restrain”. People who used horses daily would certainly think of a check as a strong restraint.

For #FluorescenceFriday, a throwback to an old project--an NIH3T3 mouse fibroblast with microtubules in magenta and total mRNA FISH in yellow.
An NIH 3T3 fibroblast with a network of microtubules in magenta and diffuse staining of mRNA in yellow.  The nucleus appears mostly white, with nucleoli showing faintly pink.
