I’m in camp: “text formats” are the worst camp. We should only ever make formats that are strictly editable by a rich text or similar editor. These types of technical details are distracting when authoring and error prone

💯. I hate having tests run in a separate process like the pattern of using Playwright though. Has anyone found a good system for running test logic in the browser too? I was tracking vitest for this but never checked out their attempt

What’s your email? I’d love to interview you to understand your usage pattern. I’m trying to get a lot of early feedback before doing a more open beta. Email me at francois@decode.dev and let’s chat if you are up to it

I’m curious what you were thinking about exactly. Check out Decode: decode.dev to see if it’s in the same ballpark:

I feel like @todepond.com and @steveruizok.bsky.social have sort of mastered the make something cool and it acts as content marketing for your product. Need a related product for that to work of course. Working at Synthesis School might be a good fit, though the topics for explainers are limited

Today was my last day at Descript. I really enjoyed my last 2 years and am super excited about the roadmap! I’m sad to be leaving but excited for what’s next, more to come on that!

Command+Shift+V is a god send. I used to paste into the command bar and then copy again to remove formatting until I learned that.

Great thread for makers of VS Code extensions that interact with react-based code. Triplex is shaping up real nice. Must have been so much work!

So while I'm here comparing Tldraw to other hand written styled fonts, I may go as far as not using handwritten style fonts at all. I'd miss the informal look though.

Francois Laberge @seflless.bsky.social · 26/12/2024
I switched early to using Tldraw over Excalidraw was because I liked how it looked. It had a cleaner look and the font were more legible. I don't think Tldraw's fonts are the most legible though, especially when zoomed out. So I'm hoping to improve things there.

I'll be restyling Decode to look less like @tldraw.com's default UI, in order to build separate brand equity. First up is picking a new font. I built this tool to quickly compare handwritten style fonts with Tldraw's.

Fuck that, if you enjoyed drawing it, double down. The world needs more programmer art making it ok to not be perfect. It looks like what was intended. It’s like hiding yourself not including your own drawings if you like drawing.

My 6 year old couldn’t figure out without a clue, and then figured out the dots create the lines part. I think understanding what pattern examples are got him a bit. I think a little above or below 6years old is a reasonable range to say when humans can start to do it.

That has turned out to be a lot of work. It required full support for GFM (Github Flavored Markdown) and a lot of additional extensions. For example adding support for inline mermaid rendering.

I'm targeting full compatibility with github.com's and VS Code's markdown renderer. Here's a demo of a bunch of the markdown features it supports.

Another new feature displayed here, is that you don't have to select shapes to execute visual prompts. If nothing is selected everything on the screen is the implicit selection. I'm loving this change, it's so much more seamless, though has some rough edge cases.

This UX is most helpful for quick changes that are more topological changes or deletions. It's faster than using chat to describe the change or manually editing code with a keyboard.

Fingers cross that somehow the AI revolution ends up with an efficient forkable, differentiable, and deterministic computing environment. The incentives seem pretty lined up, as this is basically what agents need (maybe determinism lesser so initially).
