I was a little surprised I was able to get solid pictures & video at the same time with a camera in each hand but I gave it a shot and it worked out.

Bottlenose dolphins getting some air in Tampa Bay with part of the city in the background. I had a good DSLR camera in one hand to take high resolution pictures, and a gopro in my other hand to capture it on video. Was standing in the kayak when I took this :-) #nature #animals #wildlife #tampa

Time lapse shot of a large school of rays swimming off the coast of Florida. The rays were stacked all the way to the bottom and were stirring up sediment from the sea floor as they dug up clams & other crustaceans in the sand. #nature #wildlife #amazing #animals #naturephotography #florida

if you were to jump in this group of rays they would just scatter in all directions. And if you were to stand still while a large group of rays passed by, they would all go around you like water flowing around a rock. You would have to chase them or step on one to get stung. No worries at all. 🙂

that's a cobia. They often hang around large rays, sharks, manatees, and other relatively slow moving large marine life. They also hang around schools of fish and rays. They sometimes ride in the slipstream of large rays so they don't have to actually swim and can conserve energy.

They are stirring up sediment from the ocean floor. They were stacked from top to bottom, not just on the surface. And many of them were feeding on clams & other crustaceans they dig up from under the sand.

Yes, a group of rays is also referred to as a fever. School is also correct though. None of the biologists, researchers, or other people that I speak with have ever used the term fever. They always just say school. I'm sure some of them say fever, but I see it online more than I hear it irl.

great question. That's sediment on the sea floor being stirred up by the movement of all the rays. The rays were stacked from top to bottom and not just all at the surface. And many of them were probably stopping to feed at the bottom. They dig up clams & other crustaceans from the sea floor.

Can't just enjoy a video showing a spectacular gathering of rays? Seems like there's more appropriate posts for a comment like that than one that is showing an ecosystem healthy enough to support so many animals.

A big hammerhead shark showed up while I was filming this. It swam up from the depths and was just suddenly there, next to the boat, rays scattering everywhere. Unfortunately, the camera wasn't pointing in the right direction to catch it, but I did get footage of it stalking the rays.

A huge school of rays circling off the coast of Florida. 24 foot boat for scale. These are Cownose Rays. I've been filming & documenting these large gatherings for well over a decade. This is one of the largest groups of rays ever filmed. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #naturephotography

While this isn't really dangerous for the divers, absolutely NO good is going to come from the growing practice of people feeding sharks. No good at all. It doesn't take any deep thinking to see how sharks associating people with food isn't going to work out well.

my bad. I mistakenly assumed you were one of the many people that think manatees are only in the springs. Almost all the tourists that visit Crystal River are under that impression. :-)

See Through Canoe @seethroughcanoe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Manatees are not vegetarians, they're herbivores. There is an important difference.

See Through Canoe @seethroughcanoe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
As I mentioned in the post though, I took the video in the gulf. Manatees are primarily saltwater animals even though they often go in freshwater. I would rather all the people that want to touch them and chase them leave than the people that are afraid of them.

See Through Canoe is my username and the name of my company. I watermark all of my videos so when people copy and repost them, other people know where the video came from. Most of my videos are of marine animals, sometimes my clear kayak or the clear boat ends up in the video.

They were obviously scared, I'm certain they weren't concerned about disturbing it. They may have never heard of or seen a manatee and didn't know what it was, or that it was harmless.

You don't have to run fast, just faster than the person you're with. I thought it was pretty funny how this guy outran the woman when they finally saw the manatee in the gulf in Florida. #nature #wildlife #florida #beach #animals #ocean

Cownose Rays surfing the swells. This was out in the gulf off the coast of Florida. They also surf at the beach and can sometimes be seen riding waves all the way to shore and flapping their way back into the water. bsky.app/profile/seet... #nature #animals #florida #wildlife #naturephotography

It's a very common misconception, but just so everyone reading this knows, there are NO species of porpoise in the gulf of mexico, only dolphins.

thanks. I'm always a little disappointed when people don't see them. It's so entertaining when they do. I get a kick out of watching parents drag their kids out of the water when they see a manatee coming, not knowing it's just a manatee. It's the smart thing to do though if you don't know.

Yep, they're the second largest rays in the world after Manta Rays. They also jump out of the water sometimes. I've shared at least one video showing them jumping :-) It's an awesome sight!

"before it's all gone"... that's a large part of what drives me to film and document the marine animals I see, especially things like massive groups of rays or huge schools of fish. Every year I buy a new external hard drive to store my footage on.

Manatees swimming through a big school of rays in Tampa, Florida. The water is clear but looks yellowish because of the color of the sand. They were hanging out on a shallow sandbar in about 4 feet deep water. #nature #wildlife #animals #florida #naturephotography

It was a mating herd. They get VERY rowdy when they're in the mood and can move much faster than most people think. They weren't being aggressive with me though, just each other. A mating herd is usually 1 female followed by a bunch of males. They will often chase her like this for weeks.

More info for anyone interested... A group of manatees is called an aggregation. If they're mating, as these manatees were, it can also be called a mating herd. They get really rowdy when they're in the mood, that's why I was trying to back away. I didn't feel like getting tipped over.

A herd of manatees following my kayak as I back away. Yes, I'm standing up. I almost always stand in the kayak because of the better vantage point. They were chasing each other around and headed right at me when they spotted me. #nature #wildlife #animals #kayaking #florida

yes, I can say (with proof) that it absolutely does make a difference. I have about a dozen videos that show people standing still while a school of rays swims around & between them. Animals are almost always much more concerned about something that's following them than something that's in the way

Perfect Timing! These dolphins have learned how to stun fish with their tails. Catching a fish isn't always easy, even for a dolphin. Dolphins that learn how to stun fish with their tails avoid the chase. I took the video near Tampa, Florida. #nature #animals #wildlife #florida #dolphins
