Again, this ship has probably sailed and I should get over it. But it continues to set my teeth on edge.

Not to be confused with "to lie" meaning "to tell something that is untrue." That verb is regular, meaning: I lie I lied I have lied

Objects can also lie, obviously. Every morning, I lay my outfit on the bed. Every morning, my outfit lies on the bed. Yesterday, I laid my outfit on the bed. Yesterday, my outfit lay on the bed. Every day of my life I have laid my outfit on the bed. Every day my outfit has lain on the bed.

... Every morning I lay the day's outfit on the bed. Yesterday, I laid my outfit on the bed. I have laid the day's outfit on the bed every day of my working life.

The confusion comes from the different tenses. The past tense of "to lie" is "lay." I lie I lay I have lain Every night I lie in bed. Last night, I lay in bed. I have lain in bed every night of my life. The past tense of "to lay" is "laid." I lay I laid I have laid ...

Probably doesn't matter anymore but: "To lie" is what YOU do yourself: you lie down, you lie across, you lie on the bed. "To lay" is what you do to OTHER PEOPLE OR THINGS: you lay the dress down on the bed, you lay your test sheet on the teacher's desk, you lay concrete in your basement.

#worldcon Foundational Fantasy panelists ALL white men, who fulfilled every expectation by spending 15 minutes on Tolkien, going from there to Lovecraft, saying he would've been less racist if he'd lived longer, and then calling Ursula Le FUCKING Guin too RECENT to be foundational.

30 years ago, when the population of the world wasn’t yet 6 billion, overpopulation was a huge topic. Can someone explain to me why now, with 8 billion people, when our cities are all in housing crisis, and AI is taking what jobs still exist away, we’re not talking about overpopulation at all?

Or am I wrong? Does the babydoll dress still have more to say?

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
And at the end of the day, the reckoning is with the immediate impact of Olivia Rodrigo infantilizing sexuality, and sexualizing infantilization. And in or out of context, it is 2026, nine years after #MeToo, and it’s about damn time we stopped doing this.
110
Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
But I do think it’s fair that no one’s engaging deeply with the subject right now. Bc the impact of Olivia Rodrigo wearing a babydoll dress is not historic or nuanced. The impact is a full grown woman wearing children’s clothing and being sexual about it. AGAIN. Full circle.
100
Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
So all that having been said, Rodrigo‘s use of the babydoll dress is definitely a nod to punk aesthetics in the same way that everything Rodrigo does is a nod to punk aesthetics (albeit only a nod.) and we don’t know how deeply she’s actually engaged with the subject.

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
And the riot grrl kinderwhore aesthetic was in direct conversation with fashions at that time, above all, the late 80s early 90s spandex minidress, which was ubiquitous and an actual going out uniform for young women. (Really truly: we all had at least one.) in context, kinderwhore was a throwback.

… obviously an update on the Madonna/whore complex, which commented on the single 20-something woman’s position in the Madonna/whore complex as the carrier of childlike purity rather than motherly purity. So clearly, it wasn’t as simple as sexualizing oneself in a mildly transgressive way.

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
“Kinderwhore“ typically matched frilly white baby doll dress dresses with white tights or socks, black Mary Jane shoes, and bright red lipstick, often smeared. The effect was blowsy and “recently fucked” contrasted with a mid-century child’s Sunday best …

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
The Riot Grrrl use of baby doll dresses, as exemplified by Kat Bjelland and Courtney Love, was a style that was actually called “kinder whore“ by the press, and was very clearly and deliberately intended to comment negatively upon the infantilization of women.

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
However, there’s a great deal of nuance in whether babydoll dresses are used to align the wearer with this expectation, or to subvert the expectation.
100
Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
It has always been a play on adult sexuality vs. childlike innocence. Anyone who denies that is lying to themselves, at best. It does, and is intended to, heavily underline the fact that the way women are expected to style themselves is infantilizing: hairless, skinny, big eyed and big lipped …

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Some outlets are pointing out that the babydoll dress was originally designed during World War II in response to a fabric shortage. That may be true, but the power of the dress is now and has always been the punch of seeing a full grown woman wearing childlike clothing.

Claire Light/Jadie Jang (she/her) @seelight.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Okay. While my knee-jerk reaction to the Olivia Rodrigo babydoll dress controversy is an eye roll, we do have to recognize that Society is always recalibrating on things like this, and it’s absolutely appropriate to rethink this sort of thing. So here goes:

So I was reading Pete Townshend's Wiki page and Who's Next's songs were supposed to be a really complex and weird rock opera. I feel like I've heard a lot of speculation about what Baba O'Riley means, but the Wiki page spells out a storyline that fits it perfectly. Was this always common knowledge?

And can we stop thinking we're too high-minded for celebrity squabbles? Justin Baldoni and his PR team rely on us being disgusted by the sordidness. He sexually harassed Blake Lively and then paid someone to lie about her on social media. That will never be okay and we need to NOTICE and SPEAK OUT.

Although I like renaming Chavez things after Huerta, I like renaming them "Farm Worker" or "Labor" or something better and representative of the whole movement, even more. Because it was Chavez' cult of personality that allowed him to rape. So let's not transfer that power to another personality.

No trope is more frustrating and boring than conflicts that arise purely out of a lack of communication. I’m not talking Romeo/Juliet-style couldn’t reach each other. I mean: see e/o every day but don’t share crucial life-and-death information. About to DNF the second book in a trilogy for this.

I’m just gonna keep saying it hoping people hear it: “enormity“ =\= “enormousness“. “Enormity“ means “extreme wickedness.” it’s appropriate applied to Jeffrey Epstein, not the Grand Canyon.

Young writers: “town home” is a marketing term. The real word for that type of building is “town house.” A “home” is any place a person lives. A “house” is a building intended as a residence. This is why “homelessness” is giving way to “unhoused.” And it’s time the neologism “townhome” did likewise.

The only people who are out here trying to trivialize what Epstein survivors experienced are people who are personally invested in doing so. If that doesn’t describe you, STOP IT. Let things be what they are; and CALL things what they are.

Acknowledging that difference helps people understand what really happened, rather than whipping up a frenzy of rage through faulty rhetoric. Understanding matters. It’s time we stopped talking down—dumbing down—and started expecting nuance and critical understanding from people.

… & Co. were committing, but we’re only going to talk about “pedophilia.” Stop it. All rape and sexual abuse is bad. There’s no hierarchy, and no reason to get crazy about one type and not another. Words matter. Definitions matter. DISTINCTIONS matter. Ephebophilia and Pedophilia are different.

By angrily insisting on there being no difference between the 2, ironically YOU are the one creating, by implication, a hierarchy of sexual abuse, in which ephebophilia isn’t as bad as pedophilia, ergo, rape of a full adult must be even less bad than that, since adult rape is mostly what Epstein …
