The Sacred Fount, the target of a famously withering review by Rebecca West, is often considered one of the most otiose, pointlessly circumlocutious Jamesian elaborations, but this story of vampiric transfers of youth, vitality, and intelligence among wealthy guests--

One thing about living in this country right now is that you can't ever, not even for a moment, be free of the stench of the giant pile of orange shit clogging up the toilet bowl of the republic. The fecal reek of the overflowing national commode wafts its way into every part of life, every crevice.

Caught a screening of the Toni Cade Bambara doc a few nights ago (dir. Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez), which did seem to get at the central paradox of this dynamic, righteous, and rumbustiously idiosyncratic writer's life:

If you are at all interested in Providence, Fort Thunder, the intersection of fine art and comics, beautiful drawings, urban exploration, or boats, I hope you'll read this, the piece I've done for The Comics Journal I am most proud of and excited about. Contains large images, best read on desktop

Daisy Kenyon (Preminger, 1947), which I watched a few nights ago, is a very interesting movie, a kind of deglamorized Laura that seeks to present the story of a love triangle in ever more frank, stripped-down terms, reducing it as the film continues to its bare fundamentals.

Reading (in breaks btw "lite" social reproductive labor) this extremely supple and sympathetic analysis of operaismo in the 1960s and 1970s, which expertly weaves together a number of complex overlapping elements including regional labor factionalism, internal migration, Maoism, May 1968,--

DP's musical persona wasn't all love and kindness, as this song about a group of mistreated reform school children who burn the place to the ground--killing, it's strongly implied, its sadistic matron--proves. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxYH...

What’s disappointing about Moresco’s recent book on Leopardi is not that he summons this most bleakly forbidding of Italian authors back from the dead for a conversation on vexed literary and political matters of the present day.

The primary interest of Fleur Jaeggy's exiguous, skeletal memoir of Ingeborg Bachmann is her undisguisedly bitter allegation that Christine Koschel, Bachmann's confidante and editor, and Isolde Moser, Bachmann's sister, shrouded Bachmann's burn accident in secrecy in the first crucial days--

~Speaking~ of secret reading (which I never do [Lloyd Richards voice from All About Eve: "That book is out of print; those days are gone"]; in fact, I am recklessly garrulous and indiscreet about what I read, accosting passersby on the street to tell them the latest book that "resonated" with me,--

Do you remember secret reading? Books you read surreptitiously, under cover of darkness, or at least without disclosing it to others, either because such reading was forbidden, possibly shameful, or because it was a purely private pleasure that would be diminished if divulged?

Current listening. Highlights: Three songs from Les nuits d'été, hardly ever sung by men; Philippe's Act 3 aria from Don Carlos (French orig., of course); incisive, Rabelaisian performance of Poulenc's Chansons gaillardes. Missing, sadly: Mahler; JVD was quite the Mahlerian (see his Rückert-Lieder).

Unsure if the militant psychopathy of the official line of the Tr*mp goons, their unwillingness to fall back to a position of supporting the mission but decrying a few bad apples, is a sign of their frailty and imminent collapse or of a deranged assurance that will cost many more lives. Maybe both.
