Hello, since Redbubble did me dirty (suspension without explanation while owing me money) let's experiment a little bit! If I've known you long enough not to abuse my work and you want a print/sticker/whatever from me, pay me what you want, I'll give you high resolution files. Try me! #Art #SciArt

Sunrise from the kayak this morning. The waves were a little stronger than I expected, but still managed a lovely paddle. The birds were after rough fish left by one of the commercial fishermen. Everything is eaten.

There were so many Lapland, longspurs on Hecla the other day. It was like having some kind of flying entourage around the car. I kept having to slow down. We also had horned larks, pipits and a snow bunting. Definitely late fall birds.

It was amazing to be surrounded by so much colour both in the sky and on the water. I just sat there and took it all in.

It was one of those sunsets that was a gift that just kept on giving.
A bright orange streak of sun set lights up the bottom of a cloud bank and stretches up in a fan of rays up over the clouds. A large tree is silhouette against the bright light along with a number of other trees on either side of it. All of it is reflected in the Still water of the Icelandic river.

What is spectacular morning. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Looking back at last week's spectacular sunset that I got to enjoy from my kayak. It turned what was otherwise and unremarkable, mostly cloudy sky and uninteresting shoreline into something incredible.
A old dry-docked lake freighter sits on the silhouetted shoreline against the backdrop of a brilliant sunset. It's streaks of orange and deep red, lighting up pillows of clouds with deep blue sky in between. The whole scene is mirrored in the still water of the Icelandic river in the foreground.

This is why decisions like this should not be put to a public vote.

The latest sunrise in Winnipeg will be 9:26 am which is going to be miserable. In Churchill it will be 10:10 am.

I didn’t see any here either and I’m further north than her. I probably didn’t stay up late enough.

I don’t disagree with you. I just think if we’re gonna stay on one time it should be standard time.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I will agree to disagree. I think staying on daylight savings time is a bad idea and science backs me up.

We're looking at 9:30 am sunrises in mid-winter. I'm not enthused.

I would rather keep the time change, but I know I'm in the minority.

I'm not looking forward to morning walks in the dark for a month in the winter.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Similar here too. That's why I prefer keeping the clock change, but I'm definitely in the minority. We be stayed on CST, I would be getting up at 2 am for my breeding bird survey, but I'd rather deal with that than going for morning walks in the dark all winter.

Looking back to June. Momma bear and her three cubs. It was so lovely to be able to sit and watch them (safely from my vehicle). #mammals

I really don't mind the change, but I know I'm in the minority.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
There is none. It's just people wanting the later daylight in the winter and long evenings in the summer. It was put to popular vote.
141
Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Our sun is up by 4:30 in the summer so staying on standard time would make it rise around 3:30, but I'd rather that than 9 am sunrise in the winter.

I'm hoping that happens here.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I like it in the summer, but it's going to suck in the winter.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm already seeing some cautionary comments, but this is what happens when you put something like this to the public to decide.

Dr. Heather Hinam 🍁 🇨🇦 @secondnaturemb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It's happening in a few provinces. I understand the desire to stop changing clocks twice a year, but staying on DST is going to suck.

One of my favourite little fall migrants - American Pipit. I love finding these little guys bobbing along the shoreline of roadsides as they stop on their way south. #birds
An American pipit perched a rock along a rocky shore. It's a little grey-brown bird with a white breast and brownish wing and tail. An American pipit perched amid pale grey pebbles looking straight at the camera, showing up its pale streaky breast.

I feel for both of you. I went through that a lot with Toby, at least in his case they usually was actually something wrong. I hope Houdini is better by Monday.

Yes, they do migrate. I live in an area where if they stuck around they’d be frozen in for six months. I’ve never seen a flock flying either, though there were hundreds of them resting in the marsh yesterday morning.

When your sibling has a treat and you don't - two coyotes fighting over a fish head. #mammals 🌿
Two coyotes running up a slanted slab of limestone. The one in the front has a fish head in its mouth while the other chases close behind. Two coyotes tussling on top of a tilted slab of layered limestone. The coyote in the front has dropped its fish head, which runs the risk of falling into a crack between the layers. The second coyote makes a lunge for the prize.

Bonaparte's gulls in the mist of early morning, taken from the kayak. #birds 🌿
A little, white gull flaps its wings over its head as it comes in to land on the silvery water while a second one takes off behind it in a blur of wings.

Yesterday, he called me to his boat brandishing a whitefish, extolling their virtues. I had to dissuade him from putting it in my kayak, so he promised if I came back today there would be cleaned fish waiting in the back of his truck. I found them this morning. I need to have people for dinner. 2/2
Two whole, cleaned and headless whitefish in plastic. A pound of pickerel (walleye) fillets in plastic.
