The edible dormouse populations north of the Sistema Ibérico are among the southernmost in the species' range and, what's more, they are isolated. That makes them especially vulnerable.

Then, in 2025, a road-killed individual turned up. Prompted by this, César M.ª Aguilar and his team of collaborators carried out a fresh search, and have once again documented the presence and breeding of the species in La Rioja.

Edible dormice are still hanging on in La Rioja! For 30 years there hadn't been a single verified record of the edible dormouse (Glis glis) in the region, and the last two surveys came up empty. It looked as though the species had vanished from its southernmost range.

A picture of a Southwestern Water Vole.

It is a medium sized (head-body length 16 to 22) rodent (animal with a pair of incisor teeth in continuous growth), with a strong body and a large tail (10 to 15 cm). Its coat is dense and short, of dark brown colour, with yellowish tones, a bit lighter on the belly (ash grey). The hair covers the tail, legs and ears. The tail is bi-coloured, being slightly fairer on the lower part.
