Endless scrolling feeds break the mechanism by which our memory operates, blending everything that forces itself in front of us into an undefinable amalgamation without clear beginnings and ends. That’s what makes you feel like you’re just wasting hours away without having anything to show for it. Algorithmic feeds are the empty calories for your brain that leave you craving real sustenance.

The purely reactionary and ephemeral nature of social media is integral to its design. Every attempt to farm for engagement on social media and to constantly give in to the pressure to post—or risk being forgotten—is in service of the platform’s needs, not yours. Now that we’ve proven to platform holders that we’ll just mindlessly gobble it up, they’ve invented a machine to keep up with the “rising demand”. They only need you for keeping the content mill going and front load it with ads, for people who could give less than a shit. The entire concept of social media is a walking, rotting corpse, and it has long since infected the way we think about our relationships.

Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and the likes of them have been hard at work for years to erode the open web, with the explicit aim of establishing themselves as the unavoidable toll booth. They say they connect you with an audience, but all they do is extract value and give back nothing. All they really need you for is to provide their sites with “content” to keep up the appearance that they’re worth singing up for. As long as we accept this state of affairs as an inevitability, we will keep running this gauntlet.

Just, please, maintain a presence outside of social media, at least. Who knows, maybe by this point people would be more than happy to leave the torment nexus app for a moment to catch a break and they’ll be more likely to remember you for your kick-ass art page!

Similarly, stop making me join Discord servers! Stop making me hang out with hundreds of total strangers whose constant blabbering make my Discord sidebar light up like a goddamn Christmas tree unless I mute your server forever! Discord is a shit replacement for forums, it’s a shit replacement for your dev log, and it’s an especially fucking shit replacement for knowledge sharing! Searching for specific things on Discord sucks ass from a straw! Following a coherent conversation, let alone having one, is close to impossible because of all the people treating public chat rooms like their DMs, while everyone else has to read along.

You know what wouldn’t suck this bad?

A wiki, that’s publicly accessible and accepts contributions from people who care.

A blog, that’s chronological and cuts through the noise.

A website, that’s well-structured and can be bookmarked for later.

A forum, organized by topic, with a proper search, where the focus is on the subject matter rather than social capital.

The supposed “convenience” of a digital town square has proven to be an irredeemable disaster. We’ve wasted years trying to find a solution for a broken system that was never designed to serve our best interests. You can start as many palace revolutions to be a menace to the owners as you like, but in the end the house always wins!

The platforms that be have made it big by divorcing us from what makes us us. Our online lives are on a lease and the landlords decide when that lease is up. They can make it disappear at the snap of a finger, not even owing us much of an explanation of what arbitrary house rule we broke. If any one entity owns all of it, that’s a seriously skewed power dynamic you should be loosing sleep over. It’s also a massive attack surface for malicious actors who get a treasure trove if you’re just a little careless even for a second.

I don’t think Rosenblatt had the faintest idea how prophetic his pitch to Rupert Murdoch would turn out to be. We all played our part in that scheme by accepting our role as the voluntary unpaid interns of their content mills and keeping the ad-fueled misery machine going—because by now there’s hardly anywhere else to go and entire generations growing up that have not known anything else.

We have the technology and the tools to make the internet work for us. We just have to start using them to claw back what we’re denied!
