Internationally acclaimed Stage Director Bruno Ravella shares some insights on his directorial approach to Salome and Jochanaan's relationship, setting this production in a cistern within a garden, and the source of Salome's transformation. 📸 Patricio Cassinoni courtesy Irish National Opera
"What I wanted to show with that wall was that claustrophobia, that space with no exit, with no air, was the garden. The wall lifts with jochanaan and suddenly we have hope, a way out." —Stage Director Bruno Ravella on Salome."I didn't want to reduce salome to a victim or a madwoman, which I don't think she is. She starts off somewhat innocent but it's the combination of her frustration, her inability to get what she wants and needs, with her privileged upbringing and the world around her, that transform her.""When she meets jochanaan she encounters a purity of mind and body she's never known before. He provides an alternative to her world, one that offers a path to something deeper, even if she resists it."

A portrait painting of black woman wearing a head wrap, with her eyes slightly closed and hands gently touching her chin. The artist has painted her in a stylized rainbow of colors, so her face and the background are shades of green, pink, orange, yellow, and purple, while her head wrap is painted in shades of brown and olive green. Text reads Black Artists Market, Dec. 5, Midtown Square, Dec. 6, the Opera Center, In partnership with Arte Noir, Art by Myron Curry.
