Working on a small Holly Wood lidded container, this time with the bark left in to give extra character and interest. I like the results - next need to experiment putting the finish on - then experiment some more! #wip #workinprogress #woodturning #woodturner #woodturnersofinstagram

Enjoyed making these Ash Wood bowls - I got the timber as logs from a wind fallen tree, and love the contrasting colours within them. Once I had the logs, I cut/split them up, part turned them, and left to dry for about 6 months (to reduce the moisture content). They now turn beautifully !

Developed a painful dental abscess just 2 days after returning from school holidays. It's frustrating since I maintain good dental health. The abscess, likely related to an old molar issue, means I can't safely use machinery, so I'm off until next week. I'll address the molar problem once I recover.

Back after 7 weeks off for School Holidays - easing myself back in with some small bowls so I can get back to the rhythm of turning again. Am always nervous about going back after so much time - will I remember how to turn - it takes a bit of time but I'm back into the rhythm again now.

Great to hear Birmingham Jewellery Quarter awarded World Craft status. I have family ties to the Quarter since the late 19th century, with my 3x great uncle William Hare Hassler creating Liberties pieces in the early 20th century. It’s wonderful that craft skills are being recognized and valued.

I've been exploring contrasting wood colours and tonal differences, focusing on wood tone, finish, and shadows, plus the size of various tones. I like the new shape I'm creating, with a curve turning into the top, adding movement and contrast. These are small items - jewellery box or as decor.

I've recently been working on this Sycamore Lidded container, I'm pleased with how the shape and over look & feel of this has come off - it's quite small (6.7cm diameter, 6cm high) and would work well either as a decorative piece, or to store small items in. #woodturning #woodturner

I've recently been working on some pedestal pieces, including this lovely ring bowl - from English Oak, from the National Trust's Ashridge Estate, finished carefully in Microcrystalline Wax. #woodturning #woodturner #wood #woodworker

Last one before we break for Easter - have been experimenting with vertical forms for a while when I have time - here is another, with a hole in the top that can be use for dried flowers, pen pot, etc., all with my usual styling. Will be working more on these sometime after Easter! #woodturning

Cutting up Ash wood from windfallen logs revealed amazing colors and textures. I used traditional techniques like metal wedges and a sledgehammer when possible, and the rest with a chainsaw. Great for straight-grained, defect-free wood, yielding great stable pieces. Hard work, but enjoyed it!

Exploring vertical forms, using silver-plated wire and beads. This is just the beginning of my design journey, refining ideas from paper to wood and back. This piece, along with others, will be on display at the Swanbourne Exhibition with the Buckinghamshire Craft Guild. Come and see the collection.

This week, I began rough turning some Ash log pieces I cut earlier. They have lovely figures, and I managed to get larger pieces. These will dry for a few months, and I'll monitor them before turning them into proper shapes when dry. #woodturning #woodturner #woodturningbowls  #bowlturner

I've started cutting up the Ash logs from a customer, finding beautiful figures within. It's a challenge to decide where to cut for the best wood and avoid unstable parts. Marking the logs a few days prior helps me plan, but there are always surprises. #woodturning #woodturner   #bowlturner #lathe

I've been experimenting with some vertical forms recently, this is a smaller one, exploring a few ideas, which is part of the process. This one is made from English Oak. I like the repetition of the beads, and decided not to put a lid on this one, to see how it worked. #woodturning #woodturner

I found the knock-out bar that came with my lathe insufficient, so I made one from silver steel with a wooden end. The wooden end serves two purposes: it's easier to hold and heavier, and I can use a wooden mallet to gently dislodge stubborn items.

Had some lovely Ash logs dropped off today - wind fallen at a farm. This is how some of my materials arrive! 2nd photo shows all timber covered up, the timber is wet, I don't want moisture to start leaving that end grain otherwise it will crack, it's own micro environment will slow this down.

It's been the season of colds and bugs in our house recently, so not done as much turning in the past week. I have, however, had time to update my Galleries and Exhibitions page on my website. Do see the link in my profile, or go to

Half term has been a much-needed rest and tidying up period. I've enjoyed sketching for 20 years and found this charcoal sketch of a Barbara Hepworth piece from some years ago, that inspires me to create new, abstract shapes for my lidded containers.

I'm working on designing vertical forms and experimenting with a smaller prototype, leading to unexpected results. I like the curve on the sides, but I'm uncertain about the top. The Sycamore body usually contrasts with the darker cherry wood lid, but not this time. I will aside and come back to it.

Design is central to my work, where I refine ideas on paper by altering one aspect at a time. Though this process can lead to rabbit holes, it's crucial for idea refinement. Testing designs on scrap wood aids in theory exploration, even if they don't become final projects.

Rough turning bowls from air-dried English Apple and Cherry logs, showcasing beautiful colors and patterns. Although air-dried, I'll let them settle for a few days to relieve any stresses before returning and applying the finish. Last photo shows changing lathe belt to lower speeds for more power.

Time to cut up now timber, will let this rest for a while before I make things, wood is a natural material,I want to let any stress cracks etc appear now, not when I make the bowls etc. Some interesting pieces of timber in here - English Elm, English Walnut and others. #woodturning #woodturner

As a wood turner, my tools are crucial. I don't own many, just a few well-chosen ones. My lathe spins the wood, and I use handheld tools, like gouges and skews, to shape it. I rely on skill learned through years of experience, not CNC machines.

Made a few wooden mug mats recently - this one from English Ash, from National Trust's Ashridge Estate, with 5 coats of Hampshire Sheen's Citrus Oil finish . I use a similar one, no wooden item is ever going to be water proof, but I'm impressed with this finish and how resilient it is. #mugmat

I have some English Holly, with wonderful character - but grain goes in all sorts of directions, and is difficult to turn. I use light close to item, to try and make the finish as clean as possible. Hopefully this one will work out - it will be a lid for one of my lidded containers. #woodturning

David Rodgers MSDC works with wood, using traditional tools and techniques, making limited quantities of items. He loves the characteristics of timber, some of which are locally sourced, choosing each one to fit the piece, to create lidded containers, bowls and various other items. #woodturning
