Polaroid portrait 148/1000 Flipper rules, ok? I love that Stephen DePace still wants to go out and play the songs from the band he started more than 45 years ago. It’s inspiring. And every time I’ve seen Flipper, it has been a wonderful, life affirming experience.

Polaroid portrait 147/1000 I am a huge fan of everything Nat does. Some of the bands he’s played drums in, (Akimbo, Sandrider) are among my all time favorites. He’s just a monster drummer. His graphic design work is also fantastic. We have multiple posters he designed hanging throughout our house.
Polaroid photo of Nat Damm, drummer and graphic artist.

Polaroid portrait 146/1000 Gallery ERGO is one of my favorite art galleries in the city. It’s is located inside the Pike Place Market down on a lower level and it’s owned and operated by Matt. The art on display is always impressive and the artists featured are fantastic.

Polaroid portrait 145/1000 In 2010, I had just discovered a new band called the Absolute Monarchs. I was so excited to see them for the first time at the Cha Cha during the Capitol Hill Block Party.

Polaroid portrait 144/1000 If I were the mayor, I’d get rid of the police, create a public safety department, and put Shaun in charge. He’s been keeping us all safe at concerts, festivals, and major events for years. And he does it all while giving out hugs.

Polaroid portrait 143/1000 Mark Gajadhar, drummer, who has occasionally played guitar. He’s one of my favorite drummers to watch. His style is so fluid and graceful. Plus, when his hair starts whipping around, he just looks so cool.

Polaroid portrait 142/1000 Johnny Whitney, vocalist. 25 years ago, I was hanging out with friends in an apartment on Capitol Hill and someone put on a record that made me stop and ask, “who’s this?” The answer was, the Blood Brothers. It sounded so raw and unhinged.

Polaroid portrait 141/1000 Ryan and I played in the same band, but not at the same time. Which is a bummer because I think being in a band with Ryan would be killer. He always looks like he’s having a blast on stage. His old band, Black Eyes and Neckties, was a storm of chaos.

Polaroid portrait 140/1000 Twenty years ago, when I first started taking photos of bands and uploading them to Flickr, I came across Hollie’s photos. She was taking photos of some of the same bands I was, but her photos were so much better than mine. In 2011 she opened the Shakedown, in Bellingham.

Polaroid portrait 139/1000 The early years of EMP’s Sound-Off competition (now Museum of Pop Culture Sound-Off competition) brought a lot of great bands to my attention. One of those bands was Mon Frere. Like everyone else, I was completely blown away by Nouela’s voice.

Polaroid portrait 138/1000 Way before I met Marc, I used to see him all the time at shows at the old Funhouse. Any band Marc has a hand in is likely to be heavy and loud. Even in bands that wouldn’t be described as “doom”, he brings a presence and gravitas that would otherwise be lacking.

Polaroid portrait 137/1000 I’m a huge fan of Brian Cook. It’s likely anyone who is seeing this is too. If you don’t know who he is, just know, the bands he’s been in (Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, Roy, Russian Circles, Sumac…) are a big deal to people all over the world.

Polaroid portrait 136/1000 A lot of bands play heavy music. But it’s hard for me to name any that mix heaviness with despair and beauty as well as Great Falls. Demian’s voice has enough power to strip paint off walls but also evokes longing and aching better than about anyone.

Polaroid portrait 135/1000 I was already a huge fan of Constant Lovers before I actually met Joel. I think a saw them for the first time in 2009 and they just completely blew me away. On stage he’s all electricity and sparks. Off stage, he’s one of the most personable people I’ve ever met.

Polaroid portrait 134/1000 Natron, defender of fun. Many times I’ve gone to see a band at a house show and ended up standing around in some stranger’s kitchen for an hour, wondering if the band was ever going to start playing. But I never had that experience at the Greenhouse.

Polaroid portrait 133/1000 Burke is a guitar shredder and has played in so many bands. I think he’s currently involved in at least 3 active bands right now. I first met him at a show in Bellingham. A couple weeks later I ran into him at the Comet and he greeted me like we were old friends.

Polaroid portrait 132/1000 Joey and I connected through friends of friends. When we needed someone to watch our dog while we were out of town, we asked Joey. My dog can be very standoffish, but she loves Joey. And I am definitely not leaving my dog with just anyone.

Polaroid portrait 131/1000 Cheers to Kurt Bloch, a true rock and roll lifer. In 1995, I saw the Fastbacks open for Pearl Jam at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. They were already Pacific Northwest icons by that point. And Kurt just keeps playing in bands.

Polaroid portrait 129/1000 Super talented musician, super talented visual artist and designer, super nice guy. Eric is just great. Constant Lovers are such an awe inspiring band and I feel very lucky to have been able to see them so many times over the past 15 years or so.

Polaroid portrait 128/1000 Charlie is a walking encyclopedia. He reads books like most people eat food and his vast musical knowledge across many genres is really impressive. And he’s also kind and compassionate, so being around him is always a pleasure.

Polaroid portrait 127/1000 I’ve seen a lot of bands and musicians perform in my life. But between, the Ruby Doe, Sandrider, Old Iron, and a handful of other bands, I believe I’ve seen Jesse on stage more than any other musician. I got my first tattoo from Jesse in 2002.

Polaroid portrait 126/1000 Dan Peters, musician. One of my favorite drummers to ever sit behind a kit. It’s always a treat to get to see Dan play. Mudhoney, the Tripwires, the No. 3… it seems like one of his bands is always playing somewhere in town. And he was in both Nirvana and Screaming Trees.

Polaroid portrait 125/1000 Multi-instrument musician, audio engineer, filmmaker…Chris is all kinds of talented. He’s hilarious and super smart. So much quality time spent letting our dogs run around and be crazy together. My dog doesn’t want to have much to do with most people, but she loves Chris.

Polaroid portrait 124/1000 True story, I first met Mike through TikTok. During the lockdown portion of the pandemic, I started posting videos of myself playing music in my basement. The TikTok algorithm connected me with Mike who’d been posting videos of his bike rides through Seattle.

Polaroid portrait 123/1000 The first time I saw James on stage was over 2 decades ago at the Funhouse. His band, USS Horsewhip, was that perfect mix of danger and chaos. A little later, when I would go out to see my favorite bands, I started noticing he was often at the same shows.

Polaroid portrait 122/1000 At this point, the Bismarck are not just a band, they are an institution. For more than 20 years, Eric and the rest of the band have been putting out quality records. Eric is also a filmmaker.

Polaroid portrait 121/1000 Chris played bass in the band VHS. The first time I saw VHS, they blew the roof off the Victory Lounge. I was hooked and tried to go see them whenever they played. Now Chris is making music that leans more into Americana but still rocks.

Polaroid portrait 120/1000 Go out into the world and find your people. Lis is one of my people. I don’t remember when we first met. We were just at the same places at the same times often enough we just decided we knew each other.

Polaroid portrait 119/1000 Gwen’s enthusiasm is infectious. When she goes to see a band, she’s usually right up front. I couldn’t possibly count the number of times I’ve stood next to her and rocked out to bands like Sandrider, Big Business, and Red Fang.

Polaroid portrait 118/1000 I think before I met Mike, I knew of his reputation as “the best dude, the nicest guy”. Once I did meet him, everything I’d heard was true. He’s also one of the most talented musicians in a city full of talented musicians.

Polaroid portrait 117/1000 It all started with a MySpace message. I sent a note to the Heavy Hearts telling them how much I loved the songs they’d posted to their page. Lee, the drummer, wrote back saying thanks and to come say “Hi” at their next show.

Polaroid portrait 96/1000 Mark Arm, musician. I have seen Mudhoney many times. And nearly every time, during the opening bands, Mark is in the crowd watching. Not in the back or off to the side, but in crowd. I’ve always thought that was very cool. Very classy.
Polaroid photo of Mark Arm standing outside of Fantagraphics Bookstore. When tomorrow hits, it’ll hit you hard.

Polaroid portrait 116/1000 I met Malcom on Christmas Eve many years ago. That night we witnessed our very drunk, mutual friend get in a fist fight with an inflatable Santa Claus. Malcom made sure that friend got home safely.

Polaroid portrait 115/1000 Seen here wearing an owl mask she made for Rat City Art Walk, Sam is a super talented photographer and musician. She plays bass (and theremin!) and takes amazing photos of wildlife and bands. Sam’s photos of birds of prey, especially owls, are amazing!

Polaroid portrait 114/1000 David Choe’s photos of bands are fantastic! I see a lot of people dragging the shutter and creating swirls of color these days, but he was taking photos like that at the Funhouse almost 20 years ago.

Polaroid portrait 11/1000 Grant is one of the few people I know who looks forward to new episodes of Frontline on PBS as much as I do. I met Grant through my friends Katie and Dylan when Gold Sweats played an outdoor show at the roller rink in the summer of 2022.
Polaroid photo of Grant Grays looking cool as usual.

Polaroid portrait 113/1000 In the summer of 2019, I was playing music and working on new songs with some friends. We were looking for someone to sing and when Alicia came to practice and we ran through a song for the first time, it was electric.

Polaroid portrait 112/1000 In October of 1998, Zach was the first person I met when I moved to Seattle. He had just moved here from Bakersfield, CA. We worked together at the Sam Goody that was on the corner of 3rd and Pike.

Polaroid portrait 101/1000 Justin Foley, musician and union organizer. Justin plays guitar and yells in a band called the Austerity Program. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. The lock screen on my phone is the artwork from their Black Madonna record. They make me want to make music.

Polaroid portrait 110/1000 Sohrab Habibion, musician. Sohrab’s bands include Edsel, Obits, and currently, Savak. The power of music to bring people together is pretty amazing. I’d never met Sohrab, but I tried to see Obits every time they came to Seattle. I think I only missed them once.

Polaroid portrait 55/1000 The first time I saw this guy screaming into a microphone was 2011. The band was Monogamy Party. He was shirtless and rolling around on the floor of the Black Lodge as the rest of the band cranked out equally chaotic noisy music. He was like a tornado.

Polaroid portrait 21/1000 I could tell everyone about all the bands Skippy has played guitar in, like his current band X Suns (it’s pronounced, ‘ten suns’). I could talk about all the good times and bands we’ve seen together in the past 10 years.

Polaroid portrait 109/1000 I’ve seen Kinski perform well over 50 times. And every time I see them, I’m in awe of how great they are. Chris’s dense, fuzzed-out guitar tone always brings joy to my heart.

Polaroid portrait 40/1000 I believe I first met Jerry at the Josephine (now the Woodland Theater). I think Monogamy Party and maybe Rabbits were playing. It would’ve been around 2012. Nik Christofferson introduced us, but Jerry insisted we’d already met.

Polaroid portrait 111/1000 Johnny Temple, bass player in Soulside and Girls Against Boys. In the fall of 1998, the last bands I saw in Salt Lake City before moving to Seattle were Girls Against Boys and Garbage at the Wasatch Events Center.

Polaroid portrait 108/1000 Unnatural Helpers were such a great band. I saw them a lot over the years and I always loved seeing Andrew on stage playing bass. I also got to see his other band, the Trashies, a few times.

Polaroid portrait 53/1000 I won’t even try to name all the bands Jeffrey has played drums in because I’m sure I’d leave something out. I think maybe he was playing in Big Trughk when I first met him, but I didn’t become friends with him until he was playing in Post/Boredom.

Polaroid portrait 88/1000 If you know Pam, you know how great she is. It’s possible there are people out there who don’t like Pam, but I’ve never met any and if they exist, they’re probably awful people. Pam’s kindness is unrivaled. She is so supportive and generous to everyone around her.
