We are taking legal action against this measure, which we view as a deliberate and unfounded obstruction of our civilian sea rescue operations. There is an obligation to rescue and disembark individuals in a safe port.

The vessel was detained following a rescue operation carried out on Thursday, September 10, 2026, responding to a distress case near the Bouri oil platform, rescueing 20 people from a disabled fiberglass boat.

(German below) All rescued 58 people have been brought by Sea Punk I safely to port of Lampedusa which was assigned to us by the authorities for disembarkation.

Three people were already overboard and the rubber boat was listing heavily. Due to the emergency of that situation, our crew embarked all survivors to Sea Punk I. We applied then for a closer port of disembarkation with the authorities and were granted Lampedusa to bring all 58 people to land.

On it were 38 people including two babies, who are 2 and 5 months old. There was no life saving equipment, the boat was heavily overloaded and people were in critical medical condition due to dehydration and fuel burns, especially the children.

Our crew got the green light from the Italian authorities to postpone their arrival to the assigned port to search for this specific distress case. After a long search during the night, Sea Punk I crew finally could find the unseaworthy rubber boat in distress at sea.

As we were alarmed about another distress case rather close to us, we requested permission by the authorities to delay our direct transit to Crotone, in order to search for the people in distress in need of immediate help - as this is what confirms to international and maritime law.

SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
When the rescue was completed, our ship was approached and circled by an armed Libyan vessel, but shortly after they were leaving the scene. Authorities assigned us Crotone as port of safety.

SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The boat was unseaworthy, with no life saving equipment and drifting. People had been on the open sea for at least two days and were in a critical condition of dehydration. After aligning with the authorities on next steps, our crew embarked all people safely to Sea Punk I.

Under the Geneva Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights, states are prohibited from returning anyone to a country where they face the threat of torture, inhumane treatment, or persecution. It is internationally established that Libya is not a safe place.

SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Our bridge team attempted to contact the Libyan crew via radio to persuade them to leave the rescue operation to us, but their request was rejected. Every pullback witnessed by us or others constitutes a violation of international law—funded by taxpayer money!

SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
When the Sea Punk I finally reached the reported coordinates at sunrise around 6:00 a.m., our crew saw a vessel belonging to the so-called Libyan Coast Guard in the early light, forcibly taking the people in distress back to Libya.
121
SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
a boat carrying nearly 20 people had become unmaneuverable and was in distress. At the same time, a Frontex aircraft was circling overhead, broadcasting "Mayday Relay" messages—presumably to alert the so-called Libyan Coast Guard.
121
SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
As with previous incidents, we must assume this was another illegal pullback carried out by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. Just a few hours later—around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday—the Sea Punk I received another distress call from an area approximately 30 nautical miles away:
121
SEA PUNKS @seapunks.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
However, before arriving, they spotted another, significantly faster ship on the radar heading in the same direction. This ship lingered near the location for just under 15 minutes before steering toward the Libyan coast. When the Sea Punk I finally reached the site, no boat was to be found.

—one of them was marked with CP, which means that people were rescued by the Italian coast guards. The other four boats though remain empty and unmarked, which means that the so called Libyan coast guards most likely have been illegally pulling those people back. Credits: @paola.dillies

Even then, there were already about 20 abducted people on board. During the first few days of its rotation, our crew has already spotted five empty boats—silent witnesses to what happens in the Mediterranean every day: people fleeing in unseaworthy boats--

We will be on the ground to provide life-saving assistance when people on the move find themselves in distress at sea - which is excatly what international law mandates. This is a duty that should fall to EU states, yet they instead strip people of their rights and knowingly let them drown.
