You know. If you make a video about a teenager who died in 1995 whose parents and friends are still around, please consider pronouncing her name correctly. And if told you mispronounced it, offering only a shrug and "I meant no disrespect" is an ugly look. I'd rather watch AI slop.

I remember that in read-through 5 or 6, those slower books aren’t as bad. Still slower, but they show more of their hidden value. I also was older, so maybe I was a bit more patient.

I, too, use LLMs daily for uses I think they are suited for. I, too, recognize there are deep flaws in how LLMs are trained and the resources they use. Being centrist on LLMs is tough even without the vitriol. I want to figure out what an ethical LLM is. They are marvelous, dangerous tools.

When will these companies learn that when we celebrate a game company, it’s just shorthand for celebrating the devs that make the product, not the company that takes the profit? We let them take the profit as long as the devs can feed their families. FAFO

In order to properly assess the solution, you must be capable of creating it yourself. The LLM in this case, in my view, is a time saver and is not a skill multiplier. It might be easy to confuse the two, but I think the distinction is important.

It really does pick up the pace once Sanderson took the helm. I do wish Jordan had been able to finish it, but Sanderson didn’t milk it, that’s for sure. The last few go by quickly. Be sure to take your time and enjoy them.

Exactly. I think you've hit the nail on the head here. Companies have no passion or compassion. They don't worry or strive or dream. The people that make the only thing a company wants (a resource to profit from) do, and that's why we celebrate them and not the articles of incorporation.

I remember enjoying Children of Time as I was reading several sci fi books. It was one of the few that actually stuck with me. The others all blurred together. Haven’t read this one, so I’ll have to add it to my list.

My friend Chris wrote an important book. We've never discussed his experience in these areas (we were busy making music, art, and theater [and drinking]), so I'm looking forward to learning more about it and him.

I think you have a useful filter. Anyone potential partner who expects you to do anything but what you want with it is no longer a potential partner. IMO, you owe it to your late husband to only move on with someone who meets or exceeds his standards for what you deserve.

That’s a nice clean build. Good cable management, good air flow. It looks like a pro built it. He did a better job than I’ve done a few times and I’ve only ever built my own computers. Maybe he should build my next one!

Last week, a customer nearly left Telebugs because of a mistake I made at the design level. Their queue database grew to 95GB in a single day. Their app was processing ~40,000 jobs daily, and I had designed the main ingestion job to carry large payloads directly in the job arguments.

I spend a lot more time thinking about to not be wrong than how to be right. That wasn’t true 20 years ago. It’s good to grow even if it’s frustrating to need to grow.

Even wilder is that Homo sapiens was able to mate with Homo neanderthalensis! And even even wilder is that Homo neanderthalensis existed for 400,000 years, and Homo sapiens has only made it 200,000 so far at best! I think they also had a larger brain cavity on average.

Incremental addition, or additive accumulation is how I think of it. 1848 to 1900 is 52 1900 to 2000 is 152 2000 to 2026 is 152 + 20 (172) + 6 for 178 The steps can be smaller or bigger depending on how instant the mental math is.

Or should they? Easy skip if you’re sending resumes only to viable opportunities. Or to target them to get an offer and decline with feedback that they sound like buffoons when they do such things. If you’re petty like me.

I have anecdotal evidence, that's why I was sharing. In our massive, legacy test suite, rspec is slower than minitest. Our factories are ok, but maybe not optimized. Switching those to minitest with AR calls sometimes gets 4x faster, sometimes 0. Rspec is slow in our context, not all contexts.
000
Sean @seanofthedev.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
I only wanted to point out that your experience doesn’t warrant a blanket statement (IMO) that minitest can’t be faster than rspec universally. I apologize if it came across as an attack or attempting to change your mind or be combative.

Sean @seanofthedev.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
It’s never been about which fw is faster. It’s about which is easier to achieve suitable performance. So it’s contextual, but that doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. And I know you’re not saying it is. But I think your spicy take is rather local, Mr. HasGoodFactoriesAndATopHat.
000
Sean @seanofthedev.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
That’s probably true. But we’re smart people doing our best, so I don’t think it’s incompetence. Maybe it’s that you need to know more to write good factories. So then using a framework that doesn’t put that burden on us is significant.
100
Sean @seanofthedev.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
We’ve seen gains up to 4x changing a spec with factories to a test with fixtures and AR calls (1:1 parity, no other optimization). Now, that might be because our factories suck, so the root cause is human. But it does matter if you have a mature suite and specs take more than a few seconds each.
