I'm working on a video about the Vietnam War. In the past week I've seen so much grainy stock footage of Huey helicopters landing on grassy hills and troops jumping out of them that I'm starting to see that image whenever I close my eyes. *cue The Doors "The End"*

Posting book covers! Wow, where do I begin...I love them. This is also not all of them by a long shot. #booksky 📚

I finally get to use this photo in a video! That's me (on the right), @stephengrahamjones.com and the late SF writer William F. Nolan at the Bram Stoker Convention in 2014. Fun night! Few have seen this pic in 12 years. I was there to promote my book "Zombies of Byzantium."
Left to right: William F. Nolan (co-author of Logan's Run), Stephen Graham Jones (author of My Heart is a Chainsaw) and Sean Munger (author of Faraway Star) together in a hotel ballroom at 2014 Bram Stoker Awards horror convention.

Me working on an early draft of "Faraway Star" in sidewalk chalk, circa 1976. Never give up on your dreams, folks. #booksky
A toddler boy (me, in fact) writing on a driveway in chalk. Photo is old and sepia toned, from the 1970s.

Bad news for those of us with history Ph.Ds. A YouTube commenter just informed me they don’t exist!

I have a SF space opera just out, Faraway Star, about protesting war, finding love and keeping your spirit in terrible circumstances. Cover and concept art by 2 wonderfully talented artists, deliberately harking back to the classic SF cover look of the 70s. #booksky www.amazon.com/dp/B0H1KPZDLR

I bought the Blu-ray steelcase of this for my husband and we watched it last night. He loves it but I'm not really a fan. Visually beautiful, but it seemed too earnest and po-faced for me to take seriously. Would've been better if it was a bit more tongue-in-cheek. They're all Muppets!

To be clear to the world: the cover art for my book Faraway Star was not created with AI. I've been asked about it but it's 100% human made and I was involved in the process. The artist is the very talented @artbynayomi.bsky.social. The ebook is out now, paperback coming this week! #booksky 🪐📚

Evidently the lack of Trump and Epstein related content on my YouTube channel—on which I do predominantly 19th & 20th century, nautical, and even some medieval and ancient history—makes me highly suspicious. Just what my channel needs, more Trump!

This is the thumbnail for my latest deep dive history video. No one has seen it yet, just finished it! The big video will be coming Friday I hope. Probably not going to make me a lot of friends among the techbros, but I think the points I make need to be said.
Thumbnail for the video "The Cult of Technology: From Railroads to A.I." On the background of a printed circuit board, there is a nuclear explosion, and faces of Charles Crocker (19th century railroad magnate), Sam Bankman-Fried (convicted crypto scammer), Timnit Gebru (tech researcher, developer and whistleblower at Google), and an evil-looking robot.

Tomorrow I get to show my 7th graders this picture, and try to explain who the Goths were--the ones who were running around Europe in the 5th to 8th centuries--and what relationship they have to the ones they will encounter (or become) in high school. Always a fun class.
A group of modern members of the Goth subculture, all young teenagers, most wearing chalky makeup, black eyeliner and black PVC clothes.

The lineup of ships is nearly full off Astoria. I've occasionally seen four in the cluster off Rice Island, but this is close to the limit. All bulk carriers.
Screenshot of VesselFinder map off Astoria, Oregon, showing the blips of five ships anchored just off the city and two slightly NW off Rice Island.

This was posted on my Iran-Contra video. Apparently the whole thing is EEEEEEEEASY!!!!!
YouTube comment: "What is so confusing or complicated about this story?" My reply: "You mean the story I needed 2 hours to tell with a lot of animations and graphics, and which took Congressional committees months to investigate with 1000+ page reports? Oh, nothing much I guess."

Instead of kvetching about politics or tech, let's do some staterooms. This is a first class cabin aboard the SS Leviathan, the former German liner (SS Vaterland) that was given to the U.S. after World War I. Pre-Art Deco 1920s styling (circa 1923). Interior pics of this ship are fairly rare.
Stateroom aboard the SS Leviathan, circa 1923, with two twin beds, white wood paneling, an electric fireplace, and window frames covering portholes. A woman is reading a book in a chair near the porthole.

Did you know I wrote a gangster novel? Terry, a Gulf War veteran, thinks he's uniquely gifted at strategic thinking (is he really?) and instead of conquering nations he becomes a crime kingpin. With predictably bloody results. #booksky www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPJF8HZX

Staterooms! This is a first class cabin aboard the Rex, which was Italy's contribution to the great liner race in the interwar years. The ship debuted in 1932 and you can definitely see that here. Very '30s aesthetic but more Baroque than Art Deco. Sadly the ship was destroyed in 1944.
Black and white photo of an early 1930s ocean liner stateroom, with a berth-style bed at left, dresser with mirror in the center, a Persian rug, and curtain separating the washbasin area. The room has a slightly Baroque style but not overdone.

One thing I did miss about being on social media back in the day was doing my "staterooms" posts. So here goes. This is a first class cabin aboard the Bremen, the great German liner that debuted on the North Atlantic in 1929. Lovely Art Deco styling, exotic wood, etc.
Black and white photo of the sitting room, looking into the bedroom, of a cabin aboard the ocean liner Bremen, with chairs and round tables in a sleek late-1920s Art Deco style, and walls with wood parquet squares of alternating grain (probably different colors).
