Making a safer AI

I am buoyed by how many people are entering AI safety… but many people are also struggling to get a foothold. Here I am excited to discuss the technical and especially the economic context of “AI safety” so newcomers can climb the employment ladder Jacob’s podcast explores.

Today I woke up in the Hawaiian small town of Volcano just as Kilauea unexpectedly erupted and filled the lower crater with lava. A five minute drive later, I saw such brilliant color and spectacle. I feel lucky. I will always cherish this day.

Kilauea erupting in a fountain of lava shot at a distance.

Sunset at Kilauea transitions into a lake of lava in the Crater.

Pre-booked rideshare on New Years Eve: $400 (normally $130). Rental car for 24 hours with different pickup and dropoff points: $55. Rental cars are surprisingly better than rideshares pretty often.

Bluesky appears (to me) to be mostly cat images... I look forward to this social network speed running all the phases of online social network development. I must be too late for the dancing/singing hamster cartoons.

Someone I don't know accidentally sent me $103 on Venmo. Now we have a vidcall booked for January so I can confirm he is real and will no longer have the capacity to roll back the transaction -- only then will I send rando $103.

A promising direction is to make direct reference to the training set. We are working on instance based methods here...
