It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Lolll I've been doing this shit forever and saying the same exact thing I'm saying right now more than a decade ago and am "being pushed by contrarian media dynamics." 🙄 All of you are hypnotized by talk of fictional machine gods and it's me who has to bring evidence to the contrary.

I find it strange that some people refuse to believe this is the way our decentralised culture works now, that it's possible to be completely ignorant of hugely popular things that don't match your tastes and interests. People aren't lying about that because they think it makes them look cool.

It’s great that Walmart and Target can automatically link in-store purchases to my online account based on my credit card or let me start returns in the mobile app. But what I really want is the ability to print off a gift receipt (or send a digital one) from my purchase history after the fact.

I think the median American position on trans rights is something like “I don’t understand why that man wants to wear a dress but by God it’s his right as an American” which is pretty good, you can work with that

That said, there are layers of safety nets. Paper maps. Learning how to use a compass and spot trail markers. Having one or more buddies so they’re not alone. And a radio so they can call for help. Far Out and AllTrails are nice. But I’ve gotten lost or misdirected when solely relying on them.

I’m an assistant scoutmaster for my kids’ troop. Trust me - having maps in their phones doesn’t stop the kids from feeling lost. But, also…not every kid is in scouting and purposely goes places where they have no maps or cell signal.

This! 👇🏽 AI evangelists pretend that the debate over the nature of AI—namely whether it’s sentient or not, is a referendum on whether it’s dangerous. But that has no relationship to reality. AI can be, AND IS, harmful regardless of whether it’s conscious or merely a creature of its training data.

I can't stand "Choosin' Texas." It's...just an annoying song that doesn't make sense to me. And...I kind of like Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Yes, it's overplayed. And yes, it's an earworm. But...it's also fun.

And yes, there are a lot of load bearing conditionals like "may" and "might" and "could and "opinion". I'm obviously not an expert, economist, or sociologist. This is just one perspective from the cheap seats.

Sean Massey @seanmassey.net · 22/09/2026
It's obviously not the only factor, but I think (and again my unexpert opinion) is that this might have contributed to the vibecession. Americans are used to stores overflowing with cheap products. The combination of shortages/delays and rising prices may have been a contributing factor.

Sean Massey @seanmassey.net · 22/09/2026
IMO, there might be one more factor here. COVID introduced major supply shocks to the US economy - something most people aren't used to. It's more than raising costs - seeing some empty shelves at Walmart/other stores plus daily news about major US ports being backed up.
