Society needs critical analysis on all fronts, whether it's from local journalism or larger outlets that can provide greater context on broader subjects. And it's frightening to see so much of it get thrown out for the flashy lights and slop that make people "feel positive" or some shit.

It's honestly no different with the video games realm. I'd wager larger publishers especially want less people actually thinking about what they're buying and more people just going "OOOH NEAT!" when they see some sloppily rushed press release that does nothing more than show off the box art.

During the five years I worked at various local outlets, I saw these newsrooms cut swarms of talent for the sake of beefing up private equity purchases and selling off other assets left and right. It sucked. And it sounded simple on paper: big guy buys little guy, sells off parts for profit.

Found a more positive (and much needed) view on all the ensuing games chaos we're seeing right now. I still have doubts on major companies helping to save physical over the next few years, but it's still heartening to know folks have plenty to play (and other places straight up doing it better).

Agreed 100% -- most of us here will (probably, pending circumstances) be fine and have plenty to sift through. But the future of video game upkeep and preservation as we know it is essentially toast if these trends keep up. Like this is also how slop prevails.
