Seagrass is finally getting the attention it deserves, and that’s worth celebrating. But real progress won’t come from planting alone.

Researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) recently spotted a rare Dugong, or sea cow, feeding in Andaman waters. Dugongs, vital for seagrass ecosystems, are endangered due to habitat loss. WII has been leading conservation efforts under the Dugong Recovery Program since 2016, working across India to protect this elusive marine species

Seagrass flowers are a food source for fish and crustaceans. Once pollinated, seagrass flowers produce seeds, which are critical for the regeneration of meadows. These seeds can float to new areas or settle in the sand to grow into new plants, helping sustain seagrass meadows over time.

New research shows how marine heatwaves have hidden depths: “Marine heatwaves are damaging to critical ecosystems like coral reefs, driving mass bleaching events like the five we have seen on the GBR since 2016. #climatechange #marineheatwave #coral #coralbleaching www.aims.gov.au/information-...
New research shows how marine heatwaves have hidden depths: “Marine heatwaves are damaging to critical ecosystems like coral reefs, driving mass bleaching events like the five we have seen on the Great Barrier Reef since 2016. We need to keep building our understanding of them through sustained and targeted monitoring. This can inform management actions,” said Dr Benthuysen.

Oil spill still contaminating sensitive Mauritius mangroves three years on, study finds #mangrove #oilspill #Mauritius www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202...
Three years after bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef off Mauritius, spilling 1000 tonnes of a new type of marine fuel oil, Curtin University-led research has confirmed the oil is still present in an environmentally sensitive mangrove forest close to important Ramsar conservation sites.

Volunteers from Cathay Pacific and its partners plant mangrove seedlings in Carcar City, Cebu, as part of the airline’s “1 Ticket, 1 Tree and 1 Tonne, 1 Tree” campaign. The initiative, aimed at offsetting environmental impacts, saw over 60 participants contributing to the planting of 5,000 mangrove seedlings. Conservation groups have urged a science-based approach to ensure the project’s success without disrupting the delicate seagrass ecosystem. (Photo: Cathay Pacific Facebook page)

New paper shows strong stakeholder support for seagrass-associated tourism, but there are challenges. For successful seagrass-based tourism and better conservation, ongoing engagement with local communities and stakeholders is crucial. This approach not only secures conservation funding but also fosters local ownership and stewardship. Successful seagrass-associated tourism presents an opportunity to fund conservation efforts, enhance MPA implementation, and improve local livelihoods.
