Progress on my tapestry inspired by Gamcheon Village in Busan, with a nod to traditional Korean textiles. Using handspun yarn (mostly scraps) and commercial tresses. Fibres include Shetland, silk, North Ronaldsay, alpaca, merino, Border Leicester & Herdwick. #australiantapestry #handspunyarn
A woven tapestry in progress. The tapestry itself is woven on a Schacht loom and features blocks of colour in architectural shapes, with the edges of the piece done in stripes that align with colours in traditional Korean textiles. Behind the tapestry is a cartoon that is guiding the weaving, and a printout of the textile colours for reference.
The tapestry is unfinished, with more block shapes and landscape details still to weave.

I was blown away to find out I was named a finalist in the craft+design canberra 2026 creative challenge, for my daily tapestry weaving to the theme of dissent. I feel honoured to be included in an impressive lineup of finalists, and I congratulate them and the prize winners.

Went for a run with my best boy this afternoon. As a rescue who was badly neglected after the babies arrived in his previous family, the advent of a new pup has him a bit anxious and edgy. Nice to see him relax out on the trail. 🖤🤍
A smiling middle-aged woman hugs a dog out in the bush. In the background is a track and several eucalypts against a blue sky. The woman wears sunglasses, a pink headband and a black shirt; the dog is a black and white border collie.

A view looking south from Tuggeranong to the Bullen Range and the Brindabella mountains. The foreground is dark and in silhouette is a winter tree. Against the horizon is Mt Tidbinbilla and the range, lit pink and purple by the rising sun. To the left, a full moon sinks below the horizon.

All the pieces I made for the #cdccreativechallenge26 from 1 to 21 July 2026. I connected them with a raised fist in black and yellow threads + knitting needles for my favourite dissenters, the Knitting Nannas. Handspun yarns with supplementary tresses. #australiantapestry #handwoven #dissent
A collection of tapestries from the final 2 weeks of the craft+design Canberra creative challenge.
Top row: glitch (a bird in silhouette with glitch lines represented in irregular hatching); spark (a purple-headed matchstick); static - a spark leaping to a point); unbind (a dark-faced featureless girl with one braid, the rest of her hair unbound).
2nd row: ferment (a foaming gear mug); misfit (three figures in grey looking at a vivid red figure); gather (a small basket full of greens).
3rd row: freedom (a fluffy cloud against a blue sky); emerge (a green shoot emerging from dark soil); noise (blocks of white and dark with regular hatching to represent noise).
Bottom row: artificial (a brain in a jar, a comment on AI); provoke (a hand poking a bear); grace (an open mouth and the word ‘tame’ referencing Grace Tame); quack (a mallard duck in front of a Victorian cobalt medicine bottle). In the middle of the combined tapestry is a raised fist worked in yellow and black knots at the front of the tapestry - the fist is holding a black and a yellow knitting needle, referencing the Knitting Nannas. Tapestry pieces for the first week of the craft+design canberra challenge. Top row: whisper (a bot whispering disinformation); play (random tapestry elements including pick-and-pick and eccentric weaving). Bottom row: UNCEDED (a sunrise in the colours of the Australian Aboriginal flag); smudge (smoke drifting around a tree); justice (the trans flag); bloom (representation of Bob Katter and his crazy ‘let a thousand flowers bloom’ doorstop speech).

Still 100% correct. #auspol
Image of past Australian prime minister Paul Keating and an extract from his 1996 address ‘For the new Australia’ which reads:

The great tragedy of the shamelessly regressive politics of Pauline Hanson is not so much that it is rooted in ignorance, prejudice and fear, though it is; not so much that it projects the ugly face of racism, though it does; not so much that it is dangerously divisive and deeply hurtful to many of her fellow Australians, though it is; not even that it will cripple our efforts to enmesh ourselves in a region wherein lie the jobs and prosperity of future generations of young Australians, though it will—the great tragedy is that it perpetrates a myth, a fantasy, a lie.

The myth of the monoculture. The lie that we can retreat to it.

There’s no bird quite like an Australian magpie - smart, curious, bold and occasionally terrifying. Their little red eyes look hard and full of evil intent, but they sing like angels. Win their trust and their whole family will embrace you.

Starting the next sample. In the last, I used handspun Border Leicester as the base for the white, knowing it wouldn’t pack down as much as the ATW yarns. However, I was also playing with texture, and the bulkier handspun yarn shows it more clearly. Next is back to handspun mothers with ATW tresses.
Three small woven samples on a tapestry loom, in shades of white, blue and pink, each separated by a dark line of woven wool. The samples are experiments in shape, colour and texture. The first sample wasn’t working from the moment I started, but better results from the second. Sadly though, the second has none of my handspun in it. More thinking to do. This is why we sample! 😊
Two narrow pink, white and blue tapestry samples aiming for gradation from blue to pink.
The first (lower) sample is triangular and the colours aren’t distinct.
The second (top) has more depth of colour and the colours atent bundled against a white core - it’s more what I’m looking for.
A band of mottled orange sits below both samples - it’s part of the tapestry ‘floor’ that helps to establish the warp.

The tapestry shows a grove of birches, reduced to their essential elements, inspired by a grove I found during a hike last year in Ardgour, Scotland. The trees are white with buff shadows, and stand in a landscape of lush greens and browns, with blue sky behind.

The picture also shows the sides of the tapestry loom, with various tools (including tapestry bobbins and a silver fork) and yarn waste scattered on the workspace.
