🤖 What role can autonomous underwater vehicles play in helping us better understand the ocean?
100
Seabed 2030 @seabed2030.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
4️⃣ Data availability  Navies, energy companies, and telecommunications operators possess valuable bathymetric datasets that are often not publicly shared, leading to gaps in global #bathymetric mapping, even where data exists.
000
Seabed 2030 @seabed2030.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
3️⃣ Cost Modern survey expeditions require specialised vessels, skilled crews and high operational costs. For many coastal states with large EEZs, limited hydrographic capacity and budgets can make it difficult to systematically survey #offshore waters.
100
Seabed 2030 @seabed2030.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
2️⃣ Commercial incentives Coastal waters, shipping routes, offshore energy developments, and subsea cable corridors are prioritized for their economic importance. In contrast, remote deep-ocean areas rely on publicly funded research for better #mapping coverage.
110
Seabed 2030 @seabed2030.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
1️⃣ Logistics  Polar #oceans are covered by sea ice much of the year, leaving only short windows for survey operations. Meanwhile, remote mid-ocean basins can require days of transit from the nearest port, making survey time expensive and logistically challenging.

Seabed 2030 @seabed2030.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
📉 Despite significant progress, some parts of the world's #ocean remain far more difficult to map than others. Here’s why 👇
