A friend did a phd in the field which they summarised as: Think of the kind of people who are attracted to the pursuit of regulated money. Now consider the kind of people attracted to the pursuit of unregulated money.

Reese-Mogg is absolutely not an aristocrat, his father was appointed to the House of Lords as a life peer. This does not make you an aristocrat any more that the ridiculously affected way he chooses to talk.

What you’ve got to understand is that the vast majority of people in the UK think that Jacob Rees-Mogg is an incredibly privileged idiot. If they are aware of Tucker Carlson they’d also say he was also an idiot. Why did we fight ww2 isn’t exactly an intellectually challenging question.

Water for bovine agriculture in Utah has become a grim obsession of mine since it is such a small, insiginificant part of their economy, irrelevant to their food supply and presents an imminent, deadly threat to its population via the Great Salt Lake drying up and creating poisonous dust clouds

A big problem I find with reporting on IT stories is that there’s this presumption that a Computer Scientist knows everything about IT, including infrastructure engineering, service provision etc. This makes about as much sense as believing that a physics degree qualifies you in civil engineering.

I understand that it’s probably the last weekend in the UK this summer that Bikers will be able to go out for a ride. I’m not entirely sure this means they can do nearly 80+mph in a 50 limit and overtake round blind corners on double white lines… again and again…

*A common way for abusive ex-partners to screw with their exes when they haven’t been locked out of HA accounts is to remotely flash lights, turn the heating up/down, etc. A modern version of gaslighting.

I know whoever owns it is using it as it has turned on. I’d like to tell them their home automation security is somewhat lacking, but short of flashing it on and off* or going door to door asking who’s it is there’s no way, meh. I excluded it from my network and blocked its IEEE address.

Today I presented an unscheduled opportunity to see if Windows Server 2025 will run on an HP ProLiant Microserver Gen8 as hyper-v server. It will. It didn't even complain about BIOS rather than UEFI, lack of secure boot, or lack of a TPM (which is a pluggable option)...

A friend of mine works in AI and thinks bad things are about to happen. He sold his home and moved his family out the country. He said that if you own a home in a walkable San Francisco neighborhood near a taqueria with good veggie options, you should sell your home for super cheap right now.

What I’m criticisig is the idea that someone who has been working in the field for iirc three years, has little to no other experience in industry has quit his job and had a single tweet make global headline news. It should have been obvious by his age that significant further journalism was needed.

Right, but Einstein produced four detailed papers, this guy did a single tweet and flounced out of a job. You do see the difference?

News journalists continually go to Computer Scientists to opine about IT infrastructure / operational IT or security stories where they have zero expertise. I don’t know why this is the case, I mean you never hear physicists being interviewed about civil engineering.

Fraser MacIntosh @sdschap.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
It’s another news story that presumes everyone who knows about IT knows everything about IT. I’ve been saying for years that the people designing/running these models have zero idea about the design infrastructure or cost in terms of energy, storage, backup, compute, interconnects, software, etc etc

I did a witticism about where I used to work in London while in a meeting with a load of US clients. It finished with “…but if you turned left and walked for 5mins, you’d get stabbed for crack” then had to be absolutely clear it was a joke as peoples’ faces dropped because they didn’t realise.

It’s worth being absolutely clear that under Badenoch, the Tories not have not only moved away from any pretence of “green and pleasant land” but they actively deselect any candidate who “believes” in climate change. Under Badenoch, Margaret Thatcher wouldn’t qualify to stand as an MP because woke.

What I will say as an asthmatic who has converted to induction cooking and has seen a massive increase in battery electric and hybrid cars and busses etc: if the power you use for heat, transport etc is created where people don’t live, it’s much nicer where they do.

I am incredibly disappointed in channel 4, what has happened to the channel that used to run Equinox? I am not really surprised by the Graun’s review, their science reporting is pretty terrible these days. Again, considering they used to have the Bad Science column it’s fallen a long way.

3. I have a label, which is quite useful. I’ll tell people I have ADHD, but that this is just so they know and am absolutely clear it is not an excuse. However: - if you want me to do something now, make it the second most important thing on my list & it’s ok to remind me of things.

2. The very first thing I noted on the medication was I had no idea how anxious I was all the time, how crippling it had been. I would have kept that medication if it hadn’t helped with the ADHD.
