In June, KPBS reported that Black San Diegans are nine times likelier to charged with resisting an officer – and nothing else. No one should feel targeted or at risk of violence, especially by law enforcement.  So what can you do about it?

Education technology companies have created a multi-billion-dollar market out of spying on our kids. This doesn’t keep students safe; it chills free speech and increases discrimination against immigrant and LGBTQ+ students. Read our report on education surveillance tech at the link in bio.

A statement from our executive director Norma Chávez-Peterson…
25 years after the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, the ACLU remembers the victims, their families and all of those impacted.

After the attacks, the ACLU urged the government to respond justly, fairly and in accordance with the safeguards enshrined in our Constitution.Instead, U.S. leaders tortured and indefinitely detained people, launched illegal wars, surveilled Americans and committed many other horrific human rights violations that destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives at home and abroad.

They also created the Department of Homeland Security, which has been repeatedly used to go after immigrants, protestors and political opponents. We must apply the lessons of that era to the abuses of power we face today.

As we challenge President Trump’s massive civil liberties and civil rights violations daily, we know that our nation’s true strength lies in its people, in an independent judiciary and in real congressional oversight.Democracy requires that we rein in presidential power and ensure our government works not for a corrupt few at the expense of many, but for all of us.

Everyone deserves safety, regardless of where they are from. The right to seek asylum is protected under international law – but it is becoming more difficult to receive this status, says NBC 7 San Diego. This June, only 771 cases were approved across the nation, with the denial rate reaching 94%.
