I have recently switched to creating my video thumbnails with HTML and CSS. This is the most recent one. This approach has several advantages over using a graphics program (version control, unified design, repeated patterns, easy to update). Repo: github.com/ScriptRaccoo...

Git is the best software in the world. But sometimes, it does this, and I hate it.
inaccurate git diff for a sql file: in reality 3 lines were added as a block, but git thinks that one line was added to the previous block and 2 to the next block

Really nothing beats the simplicity, readability, straightforwardness and portability of raw sql. ✍️

Apart from loops, here are two features I am still missing in Vanilla CSS. (1) Mixins (to avoid code duplication and improve readability) (2) Variables in keyframes (to make them more dynamic).
@keyframes explode {
	0%,
	#{$explode-start} {
		@include translated;
	}
	#{$explode-end},
	100% {

Try to create a GitHub account today (with email + password). 😮‍💨 While I understand that GitHub needs to check that I am a human being: why do I need to make 10 tests? Also, why did they choose such low-res images? Sometimes the solution was not clear at all. The audio tests also take too long.

I have built a diary application called "Mind Echoes". 🪄 github.com/ScriptRaccoo... This has been developed mainly with SvelteKit and pure SQLite: no ORM, no UI library, almost no third-parties. Since diary entries are quite personal, several account security features have been implemented.

Sometimes I run into this situation that I have code duplication in a function and I cannot get rid of it. Have a look at this example. I repeat twice "return fail(500, ...)". A utility func will only return from itself. I need a construct that "returns in the parent". Try-catch is boilerplatey.

Here is a comparison (original font / sans-serif fonts). The adjusted version does not look beautiful, maybe some designers will cry tears, but I don't care, reading is much easier now. 🤷‍♂️

I find the font family of the "new" Svelte website so hard to read. And the reasons for choosing a serif font (see svelte.dev/blog/the-omn...) seem very weak to me ("We want to be different" 🙄). I have just replaced two font variables with a CSS extension and it is so much better for me to read.

These are all 259 Hamiltonian 7x7 grid paths that start in the top left, start walking right (w.l.o.g.), and never walk in the same direction 3 times in a row. This effectively means that straight parts are excluded. The paths "curl" a lot.

I've actually had this issue here, a function that converts boolean expressions to strings. I don't want to omit the last operator check, even though it's the only possible case left: it breaks the symmetry of the code, and it is awkward. But with the check, TypeScript fails, and I need to throw.

Can someone explain to me this TypeScript error? The compiler already knows that the branch in the end never runs, so why does it still complain that it does not always return? Is this a bug or limitation of TypeScript? 🤔
a function that takes in a boolean and returns a corresponding description as a string. when it is true, return "this is correct". when it is false, return "this is wrong". so all cases are covered, but the compiler emits the error:

Function lacks ending return statement and return type does not include 'undefined'

What I never understood about Prettier is that it accepts different indentations of an object. This makes the formatting inconsistent. I assumed Prettier's job is to be opinionated about that? I don't even want to think about which version is better.

Slidorus is a torus-shaped twisty puzzle I made for the browser. Play here: slidorus.xyz Pieces move on a 9x9 grid, whose rows and columns can be shifted in either direction. Bandaging of pieces and rows makes the puzzle much more challenging. There is also a selection of preconfigured challenges.

Here is the JS code. In the CSS code I also set a transition on the transform property so that the movement is smooth.
const dot = document.querySelector('.dot')

function set_position() {
	dot.style.setProperty('--x', window.screen.width / 2 - window.screenX)
	dot.style.setProperty('--y', window.screen.height / 2 - window.screenY)
}

setInterval(set_position, 10)

Don't. Really don't. Copy paste ChatGPT text to your landing page. It's easy to recognize for readers. It makes a bad impression. Don't have someone to actually carefully describe your product in their own words? Then why should I trust your product? I see this everywhere these days.

I have been cooking something: Raw SQL with generated types! 🪄 The database tables and queries in a folder are scanned to statically generate types for a query function. I don't like ORMs and query builders, but didn't like the type casting with raw SQL either. This might be a good alternative. 1/2
3 files in code editor: database schema in a sql file, a query in a sql file, and the a typescript file that executes this raw query and returns the rows with the correct types.

I came around a nice use case for the svelte:element component, which I never needed before. We show the preview of some entry, which is a link to the edit / details page when the user has sufficient permission, and otherwise a plain div. (Of course, check permissions also on the server.) #svelte
Code block of a Svelte component:

<!-- Example.svelte -->

<script lang="ts">
	type Props = {
		readonly: boolean
        url?: string
	}

	let {readonly, url}: Props = $props()
</script>

<!-- Render div or link -->
<svelte:element
	this={readonly ? 'div' : 'a'}
	href={readonly ? undefined : url}
>
	Preview
</svelte:element>
