Ugh! I'm so sorry you had to experience that. Our society is so steeped in misogyny that I guess it's not all that surprising that many women internalize it to that degree, but it sure is tragic.

Totally agree. I mean, who even believes they don't have biases? People who have never examined their own biases. A jury of people who aren't given to self reflection passing judgment on someone else sounds like a horror show.

...and now that I've been excused and have read up on the case, I can say that I would DEFINITELY not have been impartial

I had 2 days of federal jury duty this past week, and happily for me, the jury was selected before I had to be questioned by the judge. I was pretty sure I could not be impartial because I would favor the defendant (who I keep accidentally thinking of as the victim) and that I've been excused....

Friends who enjoy a pumpkin spice experience but avoid dairy products, I tried Táche pumpkin spice pistachio milk, and it's tasty! It's lightly sweetened and quite creamy for a plant milk. I'm enjoying it in a vanilla rooibos tea as I type. Do recommend! pistachiomilk.com/products/pum...

Friday! There's nothing like a long weekend, and with so many holidays occurring on Monday, I'd love having those extra long weekends.

I'm watching The Swan documentary, and oof, it's both horrifying and completely unsurprising. The idea was always grotesque and misogynistic, and seemed abusive even back then. Trigger warning: There are graphic shots of surgery that I personally had to turn away from.

I wasn't that excited about new Ted Lasso, but I started watching today, and it's not a perfect show, but I do still love it ❤️

This is the first of his books I've read! I'm def going to read the other ones. But still desperately hope for more of Ana and Din. The series is structured so it could keep going as long as RJB is interested in writing it, so I'll join you in hoping Ana and Din don't give him any peace! 🤞

I am having the loveliest, laziest long weekend. Today, I made pancakes for breakfast and the NYT brothy salmon and corn chowder for dinner. Tomorrow, brunch with a friend! (We will not discuss what happens the day after tomorrow...)
A plate of whole wheat pancakes covered in strawberries and bananas on a pretty plate with a border of stylized blue flowers. A view down into a bowl of brothy salmon and corn chowder

Bookmobile AND cat, count me in! I can't believe I've never heard of this series. Thanks so much for the rec! And the record shop/coffee bar mysteries sound great, too.

I’m having the fancy toast for the holiday weekend.
A white plate with hearty rye toast, one half with butter and blueberry preserves, the other half with vegan cheese, cherry tomato slices, smashed olives, and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning, accompanied by sliced golden kiwi and a pot of tea

I like all kinds of mysteries...historical, psychological, cozy, supernatural, fantasy, noir, procedural. I love pretty much any well-told story where a mystery is solved

Does anyone have recs for recent-ish stand-alone mysteries or mystery series? I want nothing more than to spend part of this long weekend curled up on the sofa reading, but I'm between books. I meant to save "A Trade Of Blood" for this purpose, but...I'm not that strong, lol
