#Stein25 🎸🔥 #MusicChallenge Day 19 - Dog defense … William Boroughs, Kansas, neighbours … Drop ins welcome! Details attached …
19 Dog defense

I called Burroughs, who had moved away from New York and spent more time in Lawrence, Kansas, and asked if he could tolerate my company for a while. I stayed there for two weeks. Bill lived in a very normal house on a very normal suburban-type street. He knew all his very normal neighbors and they all liked him. In his basement, he had this big tube set up on a stand to more quietly shoot guns through. He had a bunch of cats and I think this was around the time he wrote his short book The Cat Inside, which discusses his relationships with felines and their effect on his spiritual and psychic life. He didn’t like dogs much and said the cane he carried was in part for dog defense. - Chris Stein19 Dog defense

17 Saved by cats

The only ones in the loft were Debbie, Gary, Howie, and myself. In the middle of night, the cats woke Gary and Howie and those guys woke us. The flame had gone out in the boiler and instead of heat, it was pumping whatever sooty oily substance fueled the thing into the building. I was quite dizzy and we all had black around our nostrils from breathing this stuff. We ran around opening windows and sat there freezing while the place aired out. The cats had without a doubt saved us. - Chris Stein17 Saved by cats

Maybe I was just attracted to this gorgeous girl who was a good singer, and maybe fate had conspired to put me in this spot at that particular moment. I gathered that the Stillettos band was nonpermanent, made up of transitory musicians. Elda knew who I was as a result of my association with Eric; she might even have seen me play with him somewhere, so as soon as I was able, I was at her loft volunteering for band duty. - Chris Stein

Kevin’s hair dramatically caught fire with fairly large flames leaping off the back of his head. It took him a minute to realize what was going on. I’ve seen a lot of rock and roll moments but this was up there. He just shook his head until the fire went out and kept playing with smoke pouring off his singed hair. They didn’t miss a beat and the audience went insane. - Chris Stein

The sea of abandoned mud-covered sleeping bags was exposed. It was the only time I saw Hendrix. I was very close to the stage. 6 International Arrivals

Bob Fass was a DJ on WBAI radio. He had a popular sort of underground show called Radio Unnameable. One night he started talking about what a great time he’d recently had at JFK Airport, just grooving around in the International Arrivals Building. The subtext seemed obvious: that he meant he had been totally stoned. #Stein25 🎸🔥 #MusicChallenge 2 Uncaring aisles … Or Woolworths, parakeets, mannequins … see attached!
My mother and me were in the basement of a Woolworth’s department store in the neighborhood. I must have gotten separated and was wandering around in the uncaring aisles. Suddenly two things happened simultaneously. There was a pet section and an escaping parakeet or parrot began screeching furiously, and at that exact moment I rounded a corner and came face-to-face with a plaster mannequin that had half its head creepily caved in. Des Barres, no stranger to onstage charisma, was astounded by the Pistols’ singer, Johnny Rotten (né Lydon). “For me, he’s the Bob Dylan of that era. It was a combination of his utter confidence, the certainty that what he was doing was completely new and completely himself: ‘This is me, take it or leave it. I could give a fuck what you think.’” The audience, Des Barres says, “was in silence, unbelievably mesmerized, and Rotten just looking at them. The last thing he ever said onstage was, ‘You ever feel you’ve been cheated?’ And meanwhile, Sid”—Sid Vicious, the band’s bassist—“is on his knees picking up the money they’ve thrown. Then, blackout, and they were gone.”27 Gnomish

Rock-star indulgences of the ’70s nevertheless seemed only to get ever more indulgent. Ward Sylvester, the manager of the Monkees and teen idol Bobby Sherman, gutted a Boeing 720B—a four-engine intercontinental airliner similar in size to Air Force One—and converted it into the Starship, a flying pleasure dome chartered by Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Alice Cooper, and the other big bands of the day (accoutrements included a built-in organ and a master bedroom suite in the rear cabin). - Michael Walker25 Laurel

This is where I post from
Snoopy lookine ENRAGED as he sits up in a green sleeping bag, wearing an orange night cap. He’s on the floor in a pretty dodgy-looking basement(?) and there is a Snoopy- sized suitcase open near him with clothes and wash stuff in (I think - might be other “gear”).

23 - Detritus

Henry Diltz, beholding Woodstock’s sad, sodden detritus from the stage as Hendrix played the last morning of the festival, had a vision that, in hindsight, would be an omen for what was to come. “There were probably just a few thousand people left. And I remember looking around, and the mud, with the forgotten sleeping bags and flotsam in the field, reminded me of an old Civil War image—after the battle. - Michael Walker24 Accoutrements

John Sessions as Keith Richard’s in 1990s UK TV show “Stella Street”.
“Keef” is behind the counter at Mick ‘n’ Keef’s Corner Shop with his guitar in one hand as he pours a brown spirit into a glass with his left. Actually looks more like Prince in this shot, but whatever works.

Strick photographed a story on the Manson followers during the trial. “They were vicious, weird people. Afterward the editor of the newspaper said: ‘Don’t ever talk to them again, don’t go near them.’” Strick says the writer of the story refused to answer his door for months afterward. - Michael Walker23 Detritus

31 Striking Sparks21 - Behind the Rainbow’s ye-olde mock-Tudor facade was a dining room shaped like a horseshoe with a fireplace at one end and banquettes upholstered bordello red, supplemented by two bars and a snug upstairs dance floor. The dark, chockablock layout and mysterious twisting staircases gave the place the feel of a pirate’s ship run aground in the middle of the Strip, and rock and rollers took to the atmosphere instinctively. - Michael Walker

20 -Michael James Jackson, who didn’t use, was in the middle of a job interview at A&M Records when he was offered a line. He politely declined. “One of the things I did at Elektra when I was working there was little promotional items,” says Sally Stevens. “And for Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’ I did little coke mirrors. Everybody gave mirrors. It was very socially acceptable.” - Michael Walker20 Mirrored

19 - High-profile deaths associated with cocaine were still a decade away, when combining coke with heroin in a single syringe—a “speedball”—became chic among the rock and young Hollywood cliques before claiming John Belushi in a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont (and River Phoenix years later at the Viper Room). - Michael Walker19 Chateau Marmont

18 - “Everyone would end up at the Troubadour at night,” says Henry Diltz. “These would be the same people you might bump into in the daytime, but you’d be sure to bump into them at night at the Troubadour.” The Eagles probably wouldn’t have existed without the Troubadour. “The Troubadour was the first place I went when I got to L.A.,” recalled Don Henley. “The first night I walked in I saw Graham Nash and Neil Young, and Linda Ronstadt was standing there in a little Daisy Mae kind of dress. She was barefoot …” - Michael Walker19 Chateau Marmont

“So here was the Buffalo Springfield doing their sound check and I could have been in there shooting thousands of photos but I was shooting people walking down the beach. When they walked out, I said, ‘Why don’t you stand in front of that mural and I’ll take a shot of you.’ And that was my first rock-and-roll shot. I wasn’t even thinking; I just took it because it would be a nice picture. Then a magazine called me and said, ‘We hear you have a picture of the Buffalo Springfield; we’ll give you a hundred bucks.’ And that started my career that day, and it was just because I walked down the hill and happened to bump into Stephen Stills.” - Henry Diltz/Michael Walker10 Magazine

9 - Jam

[Paul] Body’s first night at the club was instructive. “Dr. John was playing and the place was packed. I was working the back door and I hear a knock. And it’s Cher. Have to let Cher in. Then a little later it’s John Lennon and Elton John. And some of the guys in the Band. Then the next thing I know there’s Lennon and Elton onstage, jamming with Dr. John.9 Jam

Just read on another thread that on a US radio station they gave fair warning and many were able to take precautions. Safe travels.
A commiseration meme for those who have lost Whamageddon. Andrew and George in golden light looking up to the sky and the text:
“Have a seat, enjoy the mead. Feel free to singalong”

Off to #Whamhalla for me - (Ashley Storrie show on Radio Scotland, she gave no f**ks) but the upside is that I can now use Last Christmas as my alarm tone … Good luck to fellow participants ✊🎄 #Whamageddon
A record cover of Wham’s Last Christmas. Both Andrew and George dressed up, A as a reindeer, G as Santa. Snow effects, blue background. The pair look full of Christmas cheer and japes.
