Tangent to what the original post is responding to but: Safe driving as a paid service while public transit and bike infra gets defunded and dismantled seems like a terrible solution to this problem, but that seems like where we’re headed in the US.
Any company hoping to do something about driver distraction must grapple with the majority of U.S. drivers who refuse to stop scrolling and swiping behind the wheel. For now, smartphone companies, auto companies, app makers, advertisers, retailers — just about the whole consumer information ecosystem - are happy to fill the demand. Consulting firm McKinsey projects in-car advertising, entertainment and consumer data sales will generate $11 billion in annual revenue by 2030.

By then, it's conceivable consumer cars will be equipped with a version of the autonomous driving technology that's beginning to be deployed in robotaxis and delivery vehicles in limited areas. At that point, turning the interior of a car into an immersive infotainment bubble makes
perfect sense.

I think we should revisit how badly Trump’s admin handled the pandemic from the get-go. www.nbcnews.com/think/opinio...
Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner's team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. "The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political
strategy," said the expert.

Piss Shark
The Greenland shark is not obviously beautiful. Its face is blunt, its fins stunted, and its eyes attract a long worm-like crustacean, ommatokoita elongata. These attach themselves to the cornea of the sharks' eyes, fluttering from their eyeballs like paper streamers, rendering them both almost blind and more disgusting than seems fair. They smell, too. Their bodies have high concentrations of urea; a necessity, to ensure they maintain the same salt concentration as the ocean, preventing them from losing or gaining water through osmosis, but it is a necessity that means they smell of pee - so much so that, in Inuit legend, the shark is said to have arisen from the chamberpot of Sedna, goddess of the sea. The urea is also what makes them poisonous to humans
when eaten fresh. If raw and untreated, the

I’m gonna nitpick about what she says here though. If change is done through collective effort, then we shouldn’t be throwing the most vulnerable people under the bus to get there. If Newsom continues to threaten the rights of trans people, he should not be allowed to be in the primaries at all 🤷‍♂️
Do you think Governor Newsom is a windsock?

Solnit: Not exactly. I'm watching the left gear up to attack Gavin Newsom just in case he's the nominee in 2028, and it makes my heart sink, because I watched people tear down Al Gore, I watched people tear down Hillary Clinton, I watched people tear down Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. There are definitely major things to critique about every one of them, but at the moment, when the job is to defeat the other guy, we defeat
ourselves.

This quote by Shihab al-Din al-Nuwayri, 14th cent historian, is perennial. Authoritarianism has always been depraved and requires depravity of anyone who follows
Do not complain to the advisers and confidants of the ruler whom you have come to know about a private opinion of his that you disagree with, for you will have made them aware of the ruler's trust in you. Do not befriend kings until you have trained yourself to obey them in matters that are reprehensible to you; to agree with them on matters that you disagree with; to appraise things according to their desires rather than to yours; to not conceal your secrets from them nor to arouse their curiosity about what you might have concealed; to keep their secrets from everyone else; to strive continually for their satisfaction; to act amiably toward all of their requests; to corroborate their arguments; to accept whatever they say; to embellish their opinions; to suppress your frustration toward their hateful acts; to not take credit for their good deeds; to proclaim their virtues far and wide; to conceal their vices; to befriend those whom they are close to even if they are distant to you; to distance yourself from those whom they dislike even if they are dear to you; to con- cern yourself with their affairs even when they themselves are not concerned; to preserve what they squander; to remember what they forget; to not burden them with your troubles while burdening yourself with each one of their troubles; and to be content with their failings while not being content with your own painful efforts. If you are loyal when they entrust you, cautious when they befriend you, faithful when they place their confidence in you, humble when they forsake you, obliging when they enrage you, then you will teach them while appearing to learn from them, and you will cultivate them while seem- ing to be cultivated by them, all the while thanking them while not letting them thank you. Otherwise, get as far
away from them as possible.
