Was just thinking a bit more about empathy and neurodiversity and reminded of this lovely conversation I had with Aimee Cliff (whose book on the topic is also well worth checking out!)

Well this is incredibly creepy and disturbing. iOS keyboards flatly refuse to suggest the words 'fascism' or 'fascist'. Here's a thread from three years ago, which I found because @scrappapertiger.bsky.social was trying to enter the term just now. WTF, Apple? 😳 www.reddit.com/r/ios/s/5ptY...

This led me to make some other discoveries: first, it looks like the whole of the Chinese version of Journey to the West, which @scrappapertiger.bsky.social grew up with (they're the same age!) is available on YouTube, with English (and Chinese) subtitles! youtu.be/K3KNpyKILHM?...

As someone who has been tweeted about personally by Rowling. And who spends my whole life trying to fight the damage caused by the litigation she funds. I think, personally, I would be less harmed by you giving me an actual kick in the ribs than watching the new Harry Potter & trying to justify it.

I grew up in a ‘BBC family’ (family members worked for them in various capacities over the years, radio 4 always on) and knew a lot of beeb folks. I feel like I’ve heard so many stories of betrayal and disappointment, loss of important voices and ideas, and as a listener I feel that betrayal too.

Monkey Cage was a such a great show. I’m sad that its return in this way means I’m probably adding it to the growing list of BBC programmes I feel too queasy to listen to. I’ve also not been able to forgive More or Less since they made that obvious propaganda piece on the Cass Review.

I think this is currently one of my favourite sections. Little microwave fired Raku dinosaur plant holder I made, holding with dried plants.
One rectangular section of a type tray, backed with red origami paper with little white dots. On the shelf is a small ceramic dinosaur-type creature in blue and black glaze, with holes along its back for holding plants. Two springs of dried flowers, one red and one white (Heather and babies breath) are held in its back.

I guess this might be the only fanart I've ever made! It's based on Becky Chambers' Monk & Robot books. My tea monk is modelled on @scrappapertiger.bsky.social (who this was a present for).
A polymer clay sculpture, with a balsa wood table. Sonny/Sibling Dex sits in a receptive, discursive posture, with a tea set in front of them. They are wearing an earthy green top, and have fairly short dark hair.

I've also been seeing some great moths thanks to Sonny's lightbox! Here are four of my pictures. See alt text for ID and commentary. #NationalMothWeek #WorldMothWeek #lepidoptera
A riband wave moth - beautiful, understatedly golden thing with several dark wavy lines across its wing.A peppered moth viewed from its top side, on the fabric of the moth box. It's mostly pale, but covered in tiny black spots. Its comb-like antennae are folded beneath it, barely visible.A 'mother-of-pearl' moth, viewed side-on. It's more golden than nacreous, but it does have a gorgeous shimmery quality.

It also has antennae about as long as its body, and compound eyes that reflect light in a way that makes it look like it has pupils.

The effect of the antennae folded back almost against its wings, and the illusion that it is staring sideways at us, gives it an alarmed air. That peppered moth again, this time perched on a finger and viewed partially head-on. Its antennae are mostly sideways here, in what I'd interpret as an alert but not alarmed position if it was a mammal.

Each antenna is a glorious leaf-shaped double comb.

Garden grass-veneer. I get like a bajillion of these tiny moths every time I put out the moth box. I always enjoy looking at them super close up though - the slightly startled-looking eyes, the little fairy snoot that waves about… #NationalMothWeek
A common grass-veneer moth sitting on my hand. It’s got thin antennae that are swooped back. Its wings are folded and sort of brown, with lighter brown longs running down then. It’s large eye (the only one visible in this angle) looks blueish with what looks like a little black pupil, giving it an overwhelmed expression. Yellow tail. Probably one of my favourites so far. It kept flying off to stare through a glass door into the building I was at, until I had to take out somewhere with more foliage so it wouldn’t get accidentally squished by through-traffic #NationalMothWeek

Peppered moth - famous for being a demonstration of natural selection during the Industrial Revolution, when peppered moths in polluted towns and cities increasingly became black for better camouflage, while countryside moths remained white with black spots. #NationalMothWeek

@oolong.co.uk and I just fired our first load of ceramics. This morning I took out of the kiln one of my favourite things I think I’ve made: a dragon for our pond. We also set up a new insta for things we make: www.instagram.com/fernycrafts

The question is: ‘Do I trust my own ability to only do what feels manageable for me?’ If the answer to handling emails is ‘no’, then I would need a different email policy – but still one that doesn’t put that responsibility to hold my boundaries on anyone else.

Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
To me, the question isn’t ‘do I trust clients to hold my boundary’ – because they can’t and that’s not reasonable. How can they know what my capacity is in any given week?
100
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
My email policy is that folks I work with can email me as much as they want, but there is a limit to how much I can read and respond. A question I often get from other therapists about that is “What if a client emails you all the time?” Or even “How can you trust that clients won’t abuse that?”
100
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
How often are therapists’ feelings of distrust (or policies that are basically about distrust) towards clients actually more about distrust of our own boundaries/capacity to hold? This is probably equally relevant to other helping/holding professions like coaching, teaching, support work, etc.

People with restrictive eating conditions like ARFID (but this isn’t restricted just to folks with ARFID) will literally starve to death rather than eat certain foods. Plus forcing people to eat things that disgust them or that go against their beliefs through starvation is.. kind of torture-y?

Unintentional harm is still *harm*. It’s important that that’s recognised and validated in the first instance. No one is accusing anyone of being malicious here.

Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
We’ve probably all been guilty of it but it’s worth trying not to do that when trying to be supportive.

Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I get that you’re trying to empathise. I think when someone is having a really bad time, especially as a result of poor procedures and ignorance, telling them that people are trying their best and that things are overstretched is often going to make them feel worse.
141
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I don’t think there’s any point at which anyone here don’t understand that there are reasons for it being like this. That doesn’t make any of it ok, or that it should be seen as inevitable.
110
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I think there’s a real danger when working with a very constrained and struggling, but important and well-meaning service, that we jump to defending bad decision-making, justifying it as necessary prioritising. Minority needs are often the first ones to get deprioritised and that’s a problem.
030
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Jamie, I think you’re stuck on this triaging point, and that’s not what happened. There were vegan foods available, but the processes to deliver them to Fergus were a mess, and communication with catering really poor. That’s not triage. That’s a systemic problem that needs to be addressed.

For those folks, they will say so. It’s important to believe people when they say ‘I can’t eat that’

(Not that it’s just about whether it’s a choice or not, but feel like it’s important that active throwing up isn’t the only barometer!)

(Especially as vegan friendly options were right there, seemingly unlabelled - it took the right call from the right person to get them. Glad it worked out in the end, but that’s not ok that it took so long, including when they were most sick, and came down to luck.)
1103
Sonny Hallett @scrappapertiger.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I should also add that given that Fergus is currently in hospital experiencing this, it’s probably not a great time to tell them that them going hungry is a byproduct of ‘harm reduction’.
