I’m hoping for “Lo and Behold!” when he comes back to Albuquerque. I worked it into an interview I did with NPR way back in 2006.

Damon Krukowski has posted issues of his long unavailable digital zine Exact Change. I have the cover of issue no. 13. It includes a short piece I wrote called Bob Dylan, Translator and some of my cut and paste stuff. I believe that it’s from 2014. Check it out at substack.com/@dadadrummer...

What a rendition! I dig how New Lost City Ramblers do it. John Cohen told me that Bob Dylan brought up the NLCR version in conversation. The album it appears on is loaded with “Love and Theft” lines. youtu.be/MN-wvZqWSOQ

Much like Philip K. Dick, who used the I Ching while writing The Man in the High Castle, Bob Dylan consulted an oracle during the creation of Chronicles: Volume One and Masked and Anonymous. I’ve cataloged numerous irrefutable instances. One references a hexagram from the I Ching about waiting.

I clocked that Hell’s Dylan books are on the same shelf, including Chronicles. The shelf below has Blues & Chaos: The Music Writing of Robert Palmer, which includes his 1989 Rolling Stone article on the Master Musicians of Joujouka. In Chronicles Dylan slyly uses a key phrase from Palmer's article.

It’s a classic example of technology delaying advancement. When gas lighting was threatened by electricity the introduction of the Welsbach mantle improved gas lighting so much that it slowed the inevitable transition by a few decades. Bonus: some drawings I did of Liz Taylor in BUtterfield 8.

What he’s going for is that people once believed that gas lighting would never be replaced. It’s used as a metaphor for resistance to social change. While reading Hemingway’s "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" I learned what Klim is, and that a Puss Moth plane looks like a moth when you fold its wings back.

Not everyone was a fan of Warhol’s personal projects. In this round table Brigid Berlin, Vincent Fremont, and Bob Colacello grouse about the prints that Andy gave them for Xmas in 1983. A bunch of ingrates or was Andy trolling?

A Bob Dylan for a Willie Nelson is an even swap. You’ll need a couple of Pigpens for a Sun Ra.

Good stuff! Richard Prince has a bunch of Bob Dylan-related work, and one painting that includes me. Prince’s Tarantula piece should be in The Bob Dylan Center gift shop. I’d zing things up by including Bob Dylan’s painting based on a shot from Jerry Schatzberg’s 1987 thriller Street Smart.

I have a comprehensive collection of books on the evils of rock ‘n’ roll, and the supposed hidden messages. In the 80’s I corresponded with the fellow who wrote this bonkers tome.

When I was a teen in the 80’s it was shown regularly on the USA Network's late-night counter-culture programming block, Night Flight. It would alternate with Another State of Mind and The Decline of Western Civilization. My peer group could quote every line.

That IG post is something else, right? Chronicles is loaded w/bits from H.G. Wells novels (The Time Machine, The First Men in the Moon, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man) & there are a # of mentions of aliens, UFOs & the like in the Masked and Anonymous screenplay

Richard Prince has a number of works that incorporate the photos of bass playing Bob. One is a mashup with The Velvet Underground (note that the “Bingo!” comment is from Prince alter ego Joan Katz).

Graham mentions being in a Denny’s in Portland. I’d consider his matches versus these RTR dates. My guess would be the encounter happened on 11/25/1975.

Well, it strengthened Muse "Bi" Lee’s argument. "Strange New World That's a-Comin' Along: Bob Dylan, Star Trek, and the Changing Times" was an interesting paper. I hadda watch a whole lotta Bogart movies to nail that one down (which wasn’t so bad).

I appreciate your work here. My favorite category on the Dylan Pool, where folks handicap Bob Dylan setlists, are the wildcards. Gonna write, record & release a song called “Dylan Song Not On The List Played The First Time Live” and then get Bob to play it every night. 25 points a pop—I’ll clean up!

Red, Jim, and Jack Anglin performed as the Anglin Twins and Red and billed themselves as "the South's favorite trio" in the 1930s. If we’re talking about hidden twins and identity in the work of Bob Dylan, which we just were in Tulsa, the Anglin Twins are yet another pair of doubles to consider.

Cool! Andy Greene writes, “Roy Acuff's World War Il-era folk song ‘Searching For a Soldier's Grave’” It’s only Acuff’s because he *bought* it. Eyolf Østrem notes “Written by Jim Anglin (1913-1987), who sold the copyrights to Roy Acuff.” Jim Anglin is the brother of Jack Anglin, of Johnnie & Jack.

The M&A screenplay is just as dense as Chronicles: Volume One and “Love and Theft” when it comes to material incorporated from other sources. Larry Charles and I have touched base a couple of times. It still has *a lot* to give. Charles talks about writing with Dylan in his new book Comedy Samurai.

I’d wager that the “reduced price” bit has its roots in an oral history captured by Junichi Saga in his book Memories of Silk and Straw. There’s an undeniable line that turns up in “Honest With Me” just a few pages later.

I suppose that’s debatable. Dylan quotes a line from Shane in “Never Gonna Be the Same Again” (Don’t worry, baby, I don’t mind leaving I’d just like it to be my idea”). Other Westerns are referenced in Masked and Anonymous. For example, Jake Fate echoes this Sterling Hayden line from Johnny Guitar.

Hey @michaelgray1.bsky.social, I saw that you posted, “I'm told that in ‘Shane’ the song Dixie is part of the sound track, with a scene where the camera pans slowly left to right across a small group of people; in M&A Dylan sings Dixie with a small audience & the camera pans across them likewise.”

Thanks to Steve Badolato for letting me know that he figured out that this Bob Dylan painting is based on a shot from Sweet Smell of Success. This brings the tally of films that have been identified as source material used in Bob Dylan’s paintings and drawings to 70. That’s a lot of movies!

There’s a Richard Prince/Bob Dylan centerfold in the Summer 2025 issue of Gagosian Quarterly. The accompanying text is an OK starting point for considering this stuff. (Bluesky insists on a censored version of the issue’s Picasso cover). gagosian.com/quarterly/is... #RichardPrince #BobDylan
