I am excited to be participating in the very first (and, one would assume, also the last) Ward 5 debate, featuring four of the five candidates. Many thanks to the organizers for pulling this together.
All-Candidates Meeting: Hear from your Ward 5 candidates before election day.

Election Day is less than two weeks away, and some people have already voted. What's the point in asking for a lawn sign now? I'm glad you asked ⬇️

It's kind of like the guy running the Can't Be Censored account (who claims that he was censored by the CBC) bragging about being invited to cover a convention that the CBC had been banned from attending.

TIE recommends five candidates for four spots, which is challenging, but all of them are good choices. I can definitely vouch for Sara, Rachel, Brent and Mark. I haven't met Baboucarr, but he seems solid. There are candidates who want to take us backwards. It's important that they aren't elected.

Despite seeking a different position in this election, I still care very much about the future of the WRDSB, the students and families that it serves, and the people who work for it. Many people have asked me for advice in choosing the best candidates for Trustee.
Together in Education endorses Kathleen Woodcock, Brian Best and Karen Coviello for WRDSB Trustee representing Waterloo and Wilmot.

Candidates receive a lot of surveys and it can take a lot of time to respond to them. I'm proud to have responded to all of the surveys that I've received (which was more than a dozen). View my responses to the @cyclewr.ca survey here: cyclewr.github.io/election-sur...

This video shows my progress in canvassing Ward 5, in eight increments. I started canvassing on June 8 and, other than a handful of small apartment buildings that have proven to be next to impossible to access, I have personally been at every door in the ward over the past sixteen weeks.

🧵 For years, various politicians and other community members have floated the idea of amalgamating Waterloo with Kitchener, if not going even further and calling for all seven local municipalities to be merged into a single-tier Region of Waterloo. #Waterloo #Ward5

I have assured local residents who have reached out to me on this that, if I were to be elected as Councillor and sworn in this November, I would definitely intervene to ensure that consultation happens (although it's possible that it may be too late by that point).

I was pleased to sign on the Climate Action WR Candidate Pledge. climateactionwr.ca/climate-cand... #Waterloo #Ward5
2026 Municipal Election Climate Candidate Pledge

As a Climate Candidate, I believe our local councils have the power to deliver transformative climate action in Waterloo Region.

If elected, I promise to:

1. Increase action to reach our emissions reductions targets, including an 80% reduction by 2050 and a 50% reduction by 2030, as set out in the TransformWR strategy and endorsed by all eight municipalities within the Region of Waterloo.

2. Apply a holistic approach to decision-making, recognizing the interconnectedness of social, economic, and climate issues and adopting solutions that address multiple challenges, reduce inequities, create economic prosperity, and build a more resilient community.

3. Advocate to senior levels of government, recognizing that the success of municipal climate action in our community depends on supportive policies and partnerships with provincial and federal levels of government.

Why doesn’t Waterloo have a safe crossing over the Conestoga Parkway like the two in Kitchener (especially since traffic at the Kitchener interchanges – including Wellington, Victoria/Frederick, Ottawa, Courtland, Fischer-Hallman, and Trussler – is mostly controlled by stop lights)?
100
Scott Piatkowski @scottpiatkowski.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
In Kitchener, that safety problem has been partially solved by the two pedestrian and cycling bridges that traverse the Conestoga Parkway in the Rockway area (there for decades) and at Strasburg Road (finally opened in 2025).

Scott Piatkowski @scottpiatkowski.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Besides Lexington Road (which has no on or off ramps – and is actually the boundary between Ward 4 and Ward 5), there is really no safe way to cross the highway in Waterloo if you’re not in a car.
100
Scott Piatkowski @scottpiatkowski.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Take a look at a map of Ward 5. See that long sweeping line right down the middle of it? That’s the Conestoga Parkway and it divides not only the map but also the people living on either side of it.

🧵 Campaigns should be about ideas. Here is one idea that I am putting forward for Ward 5.

IDEA: A BRIDGE OVER THE CONESTOGA PARKWAY (will require two lines)

There is currently no safe way within Ward 5 for people to get from one side of the Conestoga Parkway to the other -- unless they are in a car. We could change that by installing a bridge over the highway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Here's why it makes sense to pursue this idea.A BRIDGE OVER THE CONESTOGA PARKWAY

THE NEED

- It's dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians to cross at Bridgeport or University.
- Bluevale Collegiate is inaccessible to those who live east of the highway.
- Bechtel Park and Parkview Cemetery are hard to get to from west of the highway.

THE FEASIBILITY

- Kitchener has two bridges over the Conestoga Parkway. Waterloo has none.
- There's also a cycling bridge over the 401 between Kitchener and Cambridge.

THE COST

- The bridge at Strasburg Road was opened in 2025.
- It was cost shared between the Region, Ottawa and Queen's Park.
- Waterloo is being short changed in infrastructure spending.

🧵As a longtime affordable housing advocate, I have a lot of thoughts on 250 Lincoln Road – the property at Lincoln and Mayfield that was home to St. Columba Church. Those who see this development as a defining election issue have a right to know where candidates stand and why. #WaterlooWard5
If there is one question that comes up most often when I’ve been knocking on doors throughout Ward 5 (including in neighbourhoods outside Lincoln Heights), it is what my thoughts are on the future of the property at 250 Lincoln Road. Here is my position.250 LINCOLN ROAD

THE PROPERTY

The property will be redeveloped as housing
A developer could build anything they want
A non-profit builder offers the best outcome

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Affordable housing will be good for the area
Those raising concerns have a right to do so
Townhouses are the best fit for the property
A non-profit is unlikely to propose 6 stories
There's no evidence property values will decline

THE ELECTION

I'm the best candidate to manage this issue
No candidate can credibly promise to stop it

Do you want to know if you're on the Municipal Voters' List? Do you want to add yourself or update your information? Until August 12, you can do that through Elections Ontario at www.registertovoteon.ca After that date, eligible voters can still be added, but directly through their municipality.
