Purveyor of lukewarm takes. You may remember me from such games companies as Naughty Dog, Activision, That's No Moon, Firewalk, IGN, etc. solo.to/scottlowe

TODAY is the last day to register to vote in several states. I urge you to double check your state's deadline, verify that you are registered, and make changes to your registration if needed. Then contact three friends or family members and have them do the same. whenweallvote.org

Attrition in key talent is the last thing you want after a big merger. I suspect they threw a bunch of money at them and committed to continued creative / project freedom to keep them around.

This video does a great job of illustrating the incredible complexity of launching a live service game to unpredictable outcomes, being measured in planning and investment in case of failure, and the massive challenges of scaling rapidly in the event of success. Highly recommend giving it a watch.

I love it most when it leans into the ensemble. Makes me excited for what they could do if they make a full-fledged X-Men game.

I'm only vaguely aware of the major criticisms, but personally, I'm having a blast with Wolverine. Satisfying hyper-violent combat; big bombastic setpieces; solid, well-paced story and not some 20 - 30 hour slog. Basically a playable Marvel movie, which is exactly what I want from a Wolverine game.

At a minimum, "spooky folklore adaptations" increasingly feels like a one-trick pony, rather than a filmmaking signature.

They more likely just knew the Supreme Court would inevitably railroad the suit and settling now affords them to walk with some concessions, rather than empty handed.

Claiming crunch is necessary/inevitable and refusing to hire people that speak out about the practice when your only industry/dev experience is starting a studio with your buddies straight out of college is...a choice.

IGN has survived and thrived because of the talent, passion, and commitment of the people behind its content. Unfortunately, the company has time and time again demonstrated that it believes that to be an abundant, easily replaceable resource. Sending positive vibes to all those impacted.

Plus, layoffs aren't about the growth and profits made at the time the cuts occur. They're about the growth and profits companies expect to make (or rather, not) in the time after. The depressing reality is that the growth isn't in spite of layoffs, it's—at least, in part—because of them.

To clarify: Steam data is absolutely valid as the basis for discussion, coverage, and content. However, it's a very limited view into a game's performance/health—especially for multiplatform games. And as obvious as they may seem, those caveats aren't stated as often or clearly as they should.

Irrefutable proof that the game they love/hate is succeeding/failing and the good/evil publisher should invest more money in it/close down the studio and dance gleefully on its ashes.

Third option: he was naive enough to think that nobody would find out about it. Though, I suppose that could also be a component of the first or second options.

Their work certainly wouldn't be shown to the world for the first time as short, poorly captured clips from an alpha build, posted to Twitter without critical context and covered in cryptoscam watermarks.

I mean, it's a scandal because it involves multiple felonies. And I would certainly count the hundreds/thousands of devs whose work is being publicly scrutinized in an incomplete, unfinished state among the harmed parties.

Between the GTA6 Extended Look premiere / timed exclusivity and Rockstar previously adding Red Dead and older GTA games to the service, my guess is Netflix. But even then, 10x in 3 years seems mathematically...challenging.

Everyone's mid-life crisis manifests differently. Some make a major career pivot. Others abandon their old life and everyone they've ever known to start over under a new name. Me? I learned how to get pretty OK at making pizza.

GTA6 gameplay premiering first on Netflix seems less indicative of the future of games marketing than it is of A) Netflix's broadening content strategy and B) a reaffirmation of GTA's unique status as a massive pop culture release, far beyond any other game.

I'm not disagreeing with that? Quite the opposite. The market has spoken. Discs are done. I'm saying pressure for platforms to implement protections/systems for digital games should be the priority and would be more effective because digital IS where the growth and profit lies, unlike discs.
010
Scott Lowe @scottmlowe.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
People aren't nearly as engaged, organized, and vocal with their elected representatives as they are with massive global gaming corporations, so I'd say the more realistic/attainable goal would be pushing for those protections via platform policies and systems.

Scott Lowe @scottmlowe.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Which just reinforces that people would be better served by arguing for digital rights legislation (or at a minimum, platform policies and systems) that guarantee ownership, access, or compensation for the games you buy and not fighting against the obvious and inevitable end of physical discs.

I interpreted this to mean they believe that PS6 will be more affordable than Helix or a comparable gaming PC, not that the system would be affordably priced.

FWIW this is not really indicative of anything other than standard social media policy practices basically every major company follows. In fact, many have very restrictive social policies *as a baseline*

People will be quick to see this as "be vocally critical of AI and other trends = profit," but the more critical takeaway here is that rushing to invest in, adopt, and champion the latest emergent tech as a focal point for your business is bad, short-term focused strategy.
020
Scott Lowe @scottmlowe.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Maybe, but they also have no significant market competition in terms of digital PC storefronts. Many publishers wouldn't / couldn't give up Steam sales revenues if Valve chose to draw a hard line.

Scott Lowe @scottmlowe.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
It'd take a large logistical and resource lift, but making AI disclosure a requirement of the publishing agreement with escalating penalties for failure to adhere (delisting, exclusion from promo placements, bans, risk of legal action, etc.) would be an effective deterrent—even for the majors.

Yep! Without condoning or condemning, I understand. I personally prefer digital and started shifting away from discs in the 360/PS3 era, but I also absolutely understand it raises ownership issues and eliminates the ability to lend, resell, or trade games and others may not be OK with that.
010
Scott Lowe @scottmlowe.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Not to mention current-gen games can't run from the disc and need to be transferred to system storage anyway. Plus, many can't even fit completely on the disc and require a day-one patch. Sad to say it, but physical discs are antiquated at this point.
