After deploying the Starlink satellites the decision has been taken to bring Starship home early, that means a deorbit burn over the Indian ocean and a landing North of Hawaii.

After polling engineers, they decided to proceed to orbit, it's now among one of the largest objects ever placed in orbit.

SpaceX at this time are not sure whether they're going to orbit after an engine failure on the starship. They don't need this engine, but it's neighbours are essential.

How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...
A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

The first US wide radio navigation system used sounds to help pilots steer their aircraft. Starting in the 1920's the Low Frequency Radio Range system used morse code tones that could be picked up by any radio, no special radio compass needed. youtu.be/4Q4Jsy0LGeE

Getting ready for Starship test flight #13 - the main thing they want to fix on this flight is the Raptor v3 reliability with failures on both stages last time. SpaceX has to be responsible and can't send Starship to orbit until it can be 100% sure it can bring it back in a controlled manner.

When New Glenn exploded lots of people made rough estimates of the energy in the blast wave based upon the fuel mass, but the effects of an explosion depend on how that energy is released, not just the ammount. So I set out to explain the physics: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZHS...

NASA has finally confirmed that MAVEN is lost and not recoverable, months ago it emerged from behind Mars and a fragment of telemetry suggested it might be spinning fast. Not only was It doing good atmospheric science, it was a relay spacecraft for rovers on the surface. www.nasa.gov/news-release...
