Six more texts going back to May 20 from PVD311. The first is about a heat advisory, the second is about bags at PVDFanZone, the third is a general message about visiting Providence (who is getting these texts that doesn’t live here??), the fourth is another message about visiting and some system called CodeRed, the fifth about a traffic delay, and the sixth, you guessed it, is about PVDFanZone.

Today in How Not to Civic Tech, here’s City of Providence using 311 texts—that many opted into only recently for updates about the Brown shooter—to blast constant niche updates about “PVDFanzone”, a lame World Cup tie-in amounting to a dozen food trucks and 5 booths by the train station.

Six text messages since June 5, all from PVD311. The first is a warning about a severe storm, the next five are about various FanZone (also spelled PVDFanzone and PVD FanZone) updates like parking, drones, schedule, bag policies.

Got the biggest book at the friends of the library book sale today. 🏆 Fully sweating after lugging this home! Ben Shahn monograph. Loads of good stuff. And a funny complement to one of the smaller books I treasure, his essay The Shape of Content.

My brutally honest take is that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. There is currently no ethical way to use AI, the data is cooked with bias to its core, communities are being destroyed for data centers, and capitalism does not want me to even own my own computer anymore. You could not possibly be barking up a wronger tree. Best of luck though!
