Cool Machine by Colson Whitehead The final book in Whitehead’s Harlem trilogy featuring the further adventures of Carney and Pepper. The whole series is brilliant, but Cool Machine is maybe the best of the three. Also a good companion to Heather Ann Thompson’s (non-fic) Fear and Fury. #BookSky

Could very easily have had Steve McQueen, Hatful of Hollow and Psychocandy on my list.

I loved both those albums but Bummed took over my life for about six months. What a record.

I pretty much give everything four stars because very few books are five stars, and if I get to the end, it’s going to be at least three stars. Because if it’s shit, I’ll chuck it…

1873 by Liaquat Ahamed Engaging account of the first global financial crisis. States, institutions and individuals all go big on new technology (the railroads), then a crash, then political instability, then a rise in extremism. Sort of. Really, the story is far from simple. #BookSky

Feel for Dermot Desmond. I honestly don’t think the Tennent’s Sixes are worth getting that upset about.

Great I can watch baseball from Ohio on the BBC - love the game - but tiny shame I can’t watch rugby league from Manchester.

Spending my Saturday drafting legislation to change how people drive in multi-storeys. Ie, if you have a queue of people following you, it is not acceptable to hold them all up while you tiptoe your Range Rover into the one space on Level 4, while there are clearly loads of spaces on higher levels.

Ha! We used to have a picture up in one of the offices - an aerial shot of the site before development and it was classic post-industrial wasteland. I also remember some iffy-looking tyre garages and maybe a scrapyard?

Funny - I was just trying to work it out. Is that bus stop on Ashton New Road (so heading into town)?

Ah interesting! I first went there in 2000 - the velodrome - and it looked like a spaceship that had taken a seriously wrong turn. Worked there 2012-2022 and, even in that time, the change along Alan Turing Way… it’s hard to imagine unless you knew what it was like before.

Aye I think a lot of the tutting about Burnham’s comment is coming from people - eg Winter - who didn’t know that bit of Manchester before the investment (lottery, Commonwealths, Abu Dhabi). Whatever you think of the means, the outcome has been pretty transformative.

Working ‘in town’ so walked to Kings Cross. Route took me past the British Museum, through Russell Square Gardens, past the Brunswick, past the British Library. Do that on the right sort of evening/morning and you’d be forgiven for thinking there wasn’t much wrong with London/Britain/the world.

Sebago Ranger boots with the commando sole are tremendous value and get better the more you wear them. GH Bass Alpine boots also very good. Or get Fracaps with the commando sole…

There’s got to be a campus novel in this. “Our beloved Scottish town is day by day turning into a microcosm of Manhattan’s elite world; complete with intrigue, privilege, and secrets that spread like wildfire.” www.theguardian.com/education/20... #booksky

‘It’s like the Scottish Upper East Side’: shame and snobbery as American students blamed for St Andrews classism
Online comments reflect class tensions at Scottish university between those from lower-income families and wealthier US undergraduates

You wonder who he’s narked off with. The Bangladeshi curry house with a picture of Mick McCarthy and a framed letter from the Queen behind the bar? The takeaway run by the same Chinese family for about 30 years? The shop selling Italian bicycles?

It’s a satellite village of a satellite town. Before that is was a mining village. Before that it was a clayworks. Before that farmland. Nowt wrong with it - used to live there myself - but it’s never been Jerusalem.

💯 The stress was the mess over the ownership - Green, Ashley, etc - which did feel existential, but that was a whole other story. Going to the game? Had a ball supporting the team, didn’t miss the aggro of Old Firm games one bit.

This is what we learned when Rangers got done - the whole point was to support the club, not who we were playing, or even (really) who was in the team. And I never missed the aggravation of playing Celtic. The only stress was the ownership/financial stuff - but that was a different story.
