I finished Richard Butner’s book of short stories this past weekend, and I found it quite affecting. While the stories could be (and are) categorized as science fiction or magical realism, there’s a thread of longing and loss running through them.

There was a kind of emotional monotony in the back half, but this was really good. Art as a way to process (but not necessarily heal) grief. Powerful climax & exceptional performances, most notably the child actors. Where do they get kids who can take on heaviness so well? #MovieOfTheWeek #filmsky

Baumbach has gotten so much more visually adventurous of late. And Sandler is subtle and big-hearted and sad. But at the end of the day, I related more to Crudup’s character than Clooney’s, so I didn’t connect as much as I’d have liked to. Still, several great moments. #MovieOfTheWeek #filmsky

I love a talky film. I love a real-time, one-location film. I love a sad & romantic (not smoochy-romantic, but wide-eyed awe at the beauty in the world romantic) film. I love a film with a performance at its center off of which you cannot take your eyes. I loved this film. #MovieOfTheWeek #filmsky
