I saw my Palestinian grandmother today--she's older than the state of Israel. Expelled in 1948, made a refugee. She raised 8 children, born refugees in exile. She got sick with pneumonia last week and got out of the hospital today. All she wanted to talk about was the march in DC [on November 4] and if there was were a lot of people and what everyone changed. There was an Arabic-language doc about the titanic playing in the background; she told me about all the boats and ships she would see in the port of Yaffa as a child. She told me about her Jewish friends who lived down the street from her in Palestine, how they would play games and try to do their hair how the rich ladies did. She'd go to their house on Shabbat to light candles. She talked about Easter fun with Christian children. She doesn't have to imagine a multicultural and integrated Palestine--she *remembers* it.
