For this post, we are going to focus on a location that was prominent throughout the first Beneath Still Stars book: Tycho Base.

One of the next locations within Beneath Still Stars is technically a room, but its importance to the story warrants a post of its own. The Commons is the nickname for a room aboard the Aurora-X, the ship at the centre of the series. In more ways than one, this room is the centre of the ship.

I’m continuing my series exploring some of the smaller, but important, places in Beneath Still Stars. Today, we’re visiting The Iron Lantern, a place that also appeared in the first book. The Iron Lantern is a tavern, but it isn’t a human one.

Instead of focusing on another major location in Beneath Still Stars, I thought I’d slow down and visit somewhere smaller: Solstice Brew. Tucked into a curved promenade alcove on New Faith Station, this modest café overlooks New Faith in the Alpha Centauri system.

After talking about small waypoint stations, it seems only natural to talk about their larger counterparts. Large waypoint stations work much like the smaller stations, but provide services and support the smaller ones cannot.

One of the things I enjoy about science fiction is exploring the places between the big destinations. In Beneath Still Stars, small waypoint stations serve as rest stops for travellers moving through remote areas of space.

To start off the new series exploring locations within the world of Beneath Still Stars, we're beginning with Providence, the capital city of New Faith and the most populated planet in the Alpha Centauri system. Providence isn't just the largest city on New Faith.

Ribbon Ribbon has the most tragic past of the primary characters. Elias Kean is much more commonly known as Ribbon, a nickname given to him by his mother because he loved tying coloured ribbons around his wrists as a child.

Devin Keller Probably the most humble of the primary cast. Devin's upbringing is just as humble, at least by Beneath Still Stars standards. Devin was born in 2121 on Horizon Station in Wolf 359, a well-established and comfortable place to grow up.

Hard sci-fi is building a future that feels believable. The technology should be rooted in real science. That is the approach I took with Beneath Still Stars, with two exceptions. Propulsion & artificial gravity. I wanted to keep the focus on the characters & the story.

Serenai, the outsider among the main protagonists. The alien who is trained to understand humans, but discovers there is more to learn. When I first created Serenai, the premise was a non-human with a outsider's perspective. As with all my characters she has grow into something much more.

One of my favourite parts of writing is creating characters with strong personality traits. Those traits don't just define who they are. They naturally create memorable conversations, emotional moments, and sometimes unexpected humour.

During editing of Beneath Still Stars book 2 I have noticed I can skip parts of the story. As some parts of any book can be improved through editing as a writer we also need to see areas where we simply got it right the first time. #SciFi #CharacterDriven #BeneathStillStars
