We are excited to see what comes next. She is currently completing her PhD exploring social perceptions of CCUS technologies and the energy transition, and will soon begin a new role focused on community engagement and supporting a just energy transition in Scotland.

She significantly expanded SAGES' digital reach, growing our social media community by more than 2,500 new followers and connections, establishing our presence on new platforms, and raising the profile of the network across Scotland and beyond.

Laura also played an important role in supporting media and communications training for postgraduate and early-career researchers. The success of this work led to invitations to collaborate on training initiatives with other universities, research organisations, and networks.

Alongside her work in digital communications, Laura has been a passionate advocate for public engagement, helping SAGES researchers connect with wider audiences through events, campaigns, media opportunities, and creative engagement activities.

She transformed the way we showcase funded research. Through the introduction of short videos from Small Grants she helped researchers build confidence in telling the story of their work. The result has been films from Greenland to Patagonia, Scotland to Spain & many places in between.

Laura led the successful bid for Scottish Government Climate Engagement funding to launch the SAGES Climate Science Podcast. What began as an ambitious idea grew into a platform that connected researchers with thousands of listeners and helped bring climate science into mainstream media discussions.

The annual Best Published Paper competition is now open for papers published in 2025–2026. The competition recognises outstanding research published in a peer‑reviewed journal (or assigned a DOI). Papers must be first‑authored by a SAGES postgraduate research member.

Congratulations to SAMS and UHI Professor Mark Inall who has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). The RSE has announced 43 individuals as RSE Fellows in 2026. Each will use their knowledge for the public good as part of Scotland’s National Academy.
