The old Westminster position of denying Scotland’s democracy is no longer sustainable. There is now a growing acceptance that Scotland has the right to decide its future - and we will ensure that the people of Scotland get that choice.

I recently completed Believe in Scotland's 'Don’t Block the Indyref Mandate' petition sent auto to my MSPs and MPs. Here's the response I got from Andrew Baxter MSP, and my subsequent response to him. His email was predictable but still disappointing. I'd hoped for better. #Scotland #Indyref2
Thank you for letting me know that you have signed the “Don’t Block the Indyref Mandate” petition.

I fully recognise the strength of feeling that exists on this issue and respect the right of people across Scotland to hold differing views about our constitutional future.

However, I must be clear that in the recent Scottish election, I stood on a manifesto that was opposed to another referendum at this time.I believe I was elected on that basis.

I strongly reject another independence referendum on the current grounds stated by the SNP. As a Liberal Democrat, I firmly believe that decisions of this magnitude must be grounded in clear, consistent, and unambiguous mandates from the electorate.

While it is true that the number of MSPs elected this May represent parties that support independence, it is also important to note that no single party secured a majority on a manifesto explicitly committing to holding a further independence referendum. Prior to the Scottish election, SNP leader, John Swinney, indicated that a referendum would be pursued only in the event of a clear majority by the SNP - which they failed to do.

Likewise, the parties who stood with a commitment not to support a referendum had a combined share of the vote in the May election of 58.2%.

Given this, I do not believe that the current parliamentary structure provides the kind of definitive mandate required to revisit a question of such constitutional significance for Scotland and the United Kingdom.

The 2014 referendum was described as a “once in a generation” decision, agreed by both Governments, and it delivered its outcome. It is important to respect the democratic mandate that that result delivered.

My priority remains to focus on the issues that matter most to people in their daily lives, such as the cost of living, public services, and economic stability. While ensuring that Scotland continues to benefit from being part of the United Kingdom.

For these reasons, I will not…While it is true that the number of MSPs elected this May represent parties that support independence, it is also important to note that no single party secured a majority on a manifesto explicitly committing to holding a further independence referendum.

As I’m sure you are well aware, the electoral system used in Scottish elections was specifically set up to make it nigh on impossible for a single party to win an outright majority.

As it is, the pro-independence majority won in 2026 is not only the largest ever, but is it is greater than the 2011 one which triggered the first independence referendum. It is also a bigger majority than Labour’s win in the UK election in 2025, Blair’s mandate to take the UK into war against Iraq, and far greater than the mandate won by Cameron to hold a Brexit referendum. If you respect those mandates you must also respected the mandate for a second independence referendum.

The 2014 referendum was described as a “once in a generation” decision, agreed by both Governments, and it delivered its outcome. It is important to respect the democratic mandate that that result delivered.

This is an especially disappointing statement. Salmond’s “once in a generation opportunity” (which he clearly stated was only his own opinion) is often misquoted by opponents of Scottish independence as a ‘promise', and it’s sad to see you repeating this lie here.

At no time was ‘once in a generation’ part of the Edinburgh agreement. Neither the SNP nor the UK government agreed this. Indeed Ciaran Martin, Constitution Director at the Cabinet Office from 2011 has stated that "'Once in a generation' was not a legal commitment, believe me, I prepared the legal documents for the Edinburgh Agreement.”

Whether you support or oppose Scottish independence if you are an honest democrat you must support the decisive mandate for a second referendum and people’s right to vote on it. If you don’t, then you are not a democrat. Sadly it seems you are not.
